I’ll be the first to admit I’m a little hesitant about lunch in Melbourne’s CBD. I’ve seen too many scary sandwich bars and fluoro-lit food courts for my liking serving up meals that neither look nor taste too flash. Call me fussy but when it comes to my midday meal, I don’t like to mess around!
So when I heard that Melbourne CBD restaurant Simply Spanish, responsible for some of the best Spanish food and tapas in town, was dishing out next-level lunches, I pretty much bolted there in delicious anticipation. Yep, forget about saving your paella and cocktail cravings for after hours or a weekend visit to their Queen Vic and South Melbourne Market outposts, now you can have Melbourne’s best tapas for lunch all day, erryday.
Don’t just take our word for it—here are 7 reasons we’re loving this Melbourne CBD lunch.
The tapas are out of control delicious
Ahh those suave Spaniards and their tantalising tapas! At Simply Spanish, the tapas aren’t just good, they’re oh-my-gosh-can-I-order-seconds good. From the fresh grilled corn bread and patatas bravas, to tiger prawns and pork belly (the latter being so good I may have ordered seconds…and then thirds), tapas at Simply Spanish make for the perfect lunch. Because why order the one meal for lunch when you can feast on a bit of everything?
The paella is in a league of its own
When we think Spanish food, we think paella. And for those who have dined at Simply Spanish before, I think we can all agree that they’re responsible for some of the best paella in Melbourne, hands down. The Provincial Big Pan Paella is the runaway hit at Melbourne CBD outpost of Simply Spanish, however the Gourmet Paellas are mighty worthy of an order too. The Seafood Paella, featuring saffron bisque and fresh seasonal shellfish, is fresh and flavoursome, while the Spinach & Mushroom is a brill option for vegos.
…Same goes for the dessert
One word, Listers—churros. Hot damn, Listers, they’re goooooood. Dusted with cinnamon sugar and served alongside a chocolate vodka sauce, the churros at Simply Spanish are the perfect way to finish your lunch in the CBD.
Simply Spanish have an epic lunch deal
We all wish we could have a long leisurely lunch, but sometimes that just ain’t so. Simply Spanish also offer one of Melbourne’s best lunch deals, whereby $19.50 buys you paella, tapas and either a sangria or dulce de leche dessert (available Mon-Thu, 12pm-2pm)…all brought out in Simply Spanish’s typically speedy fashion, of course. A tasty CBD lunch in a flash? Now we’re talking!
All hail the sangria!
What’s a delicious lunch if you don’t have something equally as delicious to wash it down with?
At Simply Spanish, they have an impressive drinks list, however it’s the award-winning sangria that really floats our boat. There’s a lot of hype about it for a reason; the sangria is the perfect blend of fruits, wine and spices. We tried to get the Simply Spanish team to spill the recipe but no dice! We’ll just have to keep drinking it until we can figure out the recipe…
There’s space for everyone in your office…and then some
Not only do Simply Spanish dish up one of the best lunches in the CBD, they do it in a space that can accommodate a large group booking. Can you believe it?! A Melbourne CBD restaurant that actually takes a booking?! Who wudda thunk it?!
Happy Hour = Happy Days
Particularly good if your Friday lunch turns into the long, lazy variety, Happy Hour at Simply Spanish makes for some hap-hap-happy days. We’re talking $5 Sangria, $6 Spanish beers and wines and $12 cocktails each Wednesday through to Friday, from 4pm until 6pm. Totally worth booking a late lunch, purely so you can tack Happy Hour on to the end.
So Listers, whether you’re looking for a quick bite to eat or have a bit of time up your sleeve, Simply Spanish prove that lunch in Melbourne CBD needn’t be a boring, questionable affair. Some of Melbourne’s best tapas washed down with award-winning sangria in a vibrant, buzzing atmosphere? What more could you want?
