Beer gardens. They’re strictly for summer, right? Heck no! Even though it may be -38264˚ out there, sometimes nothing beats wrapping up in your winter woollies and sipping a pint or two with your mates (or taking the cold-weather excuse to snuggle up next to your date…just sayin’!). Here are Melbourne’s best beer gardens for winter drinks, complete with heaters, awesome food menus, perfect pints and more.
If you’re looking for one of the best beer gardens in Melbourne that also caters to the non-beer drinkers, Richmond bar Public House is hard to beat! Its outdoor heated courtyard is the perfect spot for catching up with mates over some delicious bar food, and the awesome cocktail and wine list means that there’s something on the drinks menu for everyone. Public House is one of our favourite venues for Friday and Saturday night catch-ups too—what better way to start the weekend than with a cocktail on the rooftop terrace before heading below for some top-notch DJs?!
Dr Morse Bar and Eatery
Dr Morse on Johnston Street is one of Melbourne’s best bars for day-to-night drinking and dining, making their beer garden the icing on this Abbotsford cake. The food is top-notch and their drinks menu always offers something a little different from the standard bevvy list. We hear they’re gearing up for some epic mussel nights too. Juicy mussels, a pint and a gorgeous back garden? Sounds like heaven to us!
You can’t talk about the best beer gardens in Melbourne without mentioning Fitzroy institution, The Standard Hotel. Its outdoor heated courtyard, complete with enough tables and chairs to ensure that nobody ends up standing, makes it one of the best beer gardens in Melbourne for group gatherings. The menu’s great too—nothing beats a parma and a Guinness on a winter’s day!
Arbory Bar and Eatery
Tucked beneath Flinders Street Station on the northside of the riverbank, Arbory Bar and Eatery is an awesome spot for after-work drinks and nibbles in the open air. While it doesn’t follow the traditional beer garden set-up, it’s heated, has a killer drinks menu, and always has a good vibe. Our favourite winter beer spot for CBD catch-ups.
The Flying Duck Hotel
If you’re looking for one of the biggest and best beer gardens in Melbourne (we’re talking the sort that could easily host your whole street…), look no further than The Flying Duck Hotel and its absolutely mammoth beer garden. While it's currently under renovation and is due to reopen this winter, its last incarnation was a hit for everything from three-course dining to a quick pot after work. The Flying Duck should definitely be on your list if you’re a southsider.
Okay, so Jardin Tan is a little bit more up-market than your average beer garden in Melbourne but hey, we all love a little luxury here at The Urban List! A great spot for a winter’s eve date, or for tucking into some mouth-watering Vietnamese food in the open air—don’t miss the red duck curry, folks!
The National Hotel
The National Hotel in Richmond combines tasty food, superb drinks and a vibrant crowd in its awesome industrial space, which comes complete with one of Melbourne’s best beer gardens (heated for your winter pleasure). Plus, they spice their own rum. You just know that these guys mean business when it comes to winter warmers!
