Winter is here, guys. And we couldn't be more excited to rug up, switch our iced lattes for a cappuccino, and live in comfy knits and chic coats. Which is exactly why we've teamed up with the kweens of chunky knits and chic coats—Sportsgirl—to bring you this list of Melbourne only events to check off with your girls this winter. Check out their winter collection right here and stock up your cart so you're dressed to kill when you and your girls take on this list.
Fire up the group chat right now, winter is about to be lit.
#1 QVM Winter Night Market
A staple in Melbourne’s chilly seasonal calendar, the Queen Victoria Market’s Winter Night Market runs from 6 June to 29 August, 5pm to 10pm. Attracting some of our favourite food trucks and food vendors to one bustling location (there’s over 30 food stalls on any night), the Winter Night Market is worth bracing the cold for. BYO jacket and find one of their raging open fires to keep cosy.
#2 MoMA at NGV + Jazz Fridays
In partnership with The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art will present over 200 key works in eight thematic sections. Tracing the development of art and design through the decades, MoMA at NGV will run from 9 June to 7 October. For a particularly unique experience visit: visit during NGV’s Friday Nights, with a jazz theme festival running throughout winter.
#3 ACMI Wonderland Late Nights
Running the last Friday of every month from 6pm to dawn (well, midnight), dive down the rabbit hole with ACMI. Soak up the exhibition with the most wondrous backdrop of Australia’s leading and little-known musicians, electronic performers, VJs and DJs performing every Late Night. Cocktails, dancing and dress-ups are all encouraged (obviously).
#4 MEL&NYC Festival
If you’ve been itching to visit the big apple but haven’t found the time (or you know, dolla dollas), we’ve got something to scratch that craving. Running from June to August, MEL&NYC is a celebration of two of the most creative (did I mention humble?) cities in the world. Covering art, music, food, comedy, dance and film across a variety of events, expect the likes of comedian Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ronan Farrow and guest chefs from New York restaurant Momofuku.
#5 Port Fairy Dachshund Dash
While dachshunds aren’t necessarily the most biologically gifted creatures (have you seen their leg-body ratio?), no one can deny they’re a bloody cute bunch. Port Fairy’s annual Dachshund Dash returns on Sunday 10 June, with last year’s inaugural event attracting over 72 hounds.
#6 Melbourne Yarra Valley Brownie Festival
Running from 14 June to 25 June, brace yourself for 12 of the most chocolate-filled, sugar-coated days of your life. A line-up of different brownie flavours will be available through the festival, along with brownie ice-cream, brownie-inspired desserts and Brownie Bombs (we don’t know what these are either, but we’re keen). Ultimate Brownie Tasting Sessions will also be on offer, in case you want to taste 10 different flavours (you do).
#7 Open House
The 11th annual Open House will feature 224 buildings, many of which are usually inaccessible to the public. From Saturday 28 July to Sunday 29 July, this celebration of city architecture is also an opportunity to chat and debate, with tours and special events specifically designed to complement Open House.
#8 Melbourne International Film Festival
Held over three weeks from Thursday 2 August to Sunday 19 August, MIFF is a not-for-profit organisation and one of the leading film festivals in Australia (also one of the oldest). Enjoy creations by some of the biggest emerging talent in your cosiest winter getup
