Circus Shows, Cocktails & Cinemas: This Is The Best Date Night Ever

By Ellen Seah

Strap on your wedges and glam up your nails—the dream Melbourne date night is here and (for once) it’ll be extra kind to your poor, abused hip pocket. Chaddy is hosting a Festival de Luxe throughout October, transforming the centre into a hub for performance, cabaret, music and visual delights every Saturday night.

Four shows will run across four distinct stages, curated by La Soirée director (and KING) Brett Haylock. The best part: every single performance is free to see.

We’ll let that sink in.

Olivier Award-winning La Soirée will be performing on the lower ground, outside David Jones, so this is your chance to watch a variety of contortionism, circus acts and cabaret before the cast head to London’s West End.

Melbourne-based performing arts company Strange Fruit will tower over crowds, so there’s no need to jump on your bae’s shoulder (unless you really want to). Using mind-blowing sway poles, watch them perform a range of dance and theatre from metres above ground. You can catch them outside Tiffany & Co on the ground level.

Other highlights of the festival include Enlighten (which debuted at this year’s White Night) and a variety stage with rotating acts. Along with exploring the biggest array of retailers in the Southern Hemisphere (nothing says “I love you” like waiting outside the change room like some sort of personal butler), you can mix-up date night with a Festival de Luxe-themed pre-show dinner.

To celebrate the occasion, Neil Perry’s Burger Project will be serving up Festival de Ice Cream complete with vanilla bean ice cream, strawberry sauce, meringue and fairyfloss. Woodstock Pizzicheria are firing up a Festival de Luxe pizza, with a white base, mozzarella, San Daniele prosciutto, figs, gorgonzola, and walnuts. The Festival de Luxe dessert pizza includes white calubaut chocolate, season berries, vanilla bean ice cream and dark chocolate curls.

Ladurée is also getting into the spirit with a Marie Antoinette mocktail —a lush blend of Ladurée Marie Antoinette tea, grapefruit syrup, strawberry nectar and apple juice, topped with fresh strawberries and raspberries. Take my money.

Finish off the night by a little (lot) of shopping (retailers are open late until 9pm every Saturday) or catch a late-night flick (Blade Runner, anyone?).

Chadstone is also giving away a luxe trip for two to see the original La Soirée in London as part of the event. Simply visit any of the four stages between 4pm and 9pm every Saturday for your chance to win.
