However, when you find finally find the right pair, you’re practically jumping with joy, because a good pair of jeans is a staple wardrobe item that no one should go without.

We’re here to simplify the arduous denim hunt for you. We’ve identified the best denim dealers in Melbourne that are not only known for their quality and well-fitting jeans, but also for their surprising added services.

Dejour Jeans

Most northsiders are well acquainted with this age-old Brunswick institution, but Southsiders, we’re here to tell you that Dejour is worth the trek. We will warn you, however, that the small shopfront nestled among bridal stores doesn’t look like much from the outside. Inside, it's pumping with endless piles of jeans of every size, colour and design stacked on floor to ceiling shelves, lively shop assistants ready to help out and a bustling alterations service at the back. The free on-site alterations service is a serious bonus. Once you’ve find your favourite jeans, a shop assistant will whip out her chalk and start marking out the areas that need some improvements. On weekday mornings the whole process can take just less than an hour, but on weekends, you’ll be waiting a few hours longer. The kind Dejour staff have put a list on the door of the best coffee shops and activities to do on Sydney Road while you’re waiting. We’ve saved the best part 'til the last–the jeans are practically a steal at $50-$60 and manufactured locally in Carlton, their quality cannot be questioned.

Service Concept Store

The name says it all–this Fitzroy gem, conceived by the denim gurus behind local labels Rolla’s, Neuw, and Abrand, delivers quality service and excellent denim products for guys and gals. If one of the brands doesn’t quite suit you, there are two others to choose from–win! You can also pick up great plain tees and knits to style with your new jeans. As a revamped former textiles factory, the industrial space is cool, but the staff are warm and know their stuff. Staying true to their name, Service offers free alteratios with their in-house seamstress working only on weekends.

Nudie Jeans

South Yarra & CBD

With two Melbourne concept stores on Chapel and Little Collins, Swedish-based denim label, Nudie Jeans, has carved out a special place in many Melburnians’ hearts. Knowing that your jeans are made out of 100% organic cotton in a transparent production process, Nudies will make you feel as good as you look. The brand’s sustainability efforts do not stop there–they offer a free repair service, resell second hand products and recycle worn out products to ensure that their high quality jeans enjoy the longest life possible. Heads up folks, the sales staff will tell you not to wash your jeans for 6 months after purchase and despite your initial reservations, just listen to them. The breaking-in process is a journey, but at the end when you have your jeans feeling like a second skin, you will be thankful.

Nobody Denim

Fitzroy & CBD

Born right here in Melbourne and manufactured in Australia, nobody understands what Melburnian’s want when it comes to denim better than Nobody. Nobody has worked hard designing its own unique tools and techniques for hand customisation–yes, each pair of jeans is individually hand customised. Pretty amazing, huh?! The brand strives to find you the perfect fit, with women offered the choice of skinny, slim straight, boyfriend, ankle, and flare. Guys, your selection is a little bit more limited with skinny or slim straight. The Fitzroy concept store has been around for yonks, but city slickers now have easy access to their next pair of Nobodies with the brand’s new City Pop-In Store on the corner of Elizabeth and Little Bourke.

Miss Brown Vintage Clothing

100 Squared Melbourne Central

All of us have seen the racks of vintage-looking clothing set up under the historic shot tower in Melbourne Central, but I can bet that most of us haven’t given them a second glance. Well, Melbourne ladies, if this is you, then you are seriously missing out. Miss Brown has the best collection of the classic and highly sought-after Levi’s 501s in the city. At just $50 a pop, it is a mystery why some girls are still paying the exorbitant online prices of over $300 for the same pair. You can thank me later.
