You guys, it’s almost the weekend! When Friday fever hits The Urban List HQ, we love nothing more than hitting up a venue that serves tasty food, epic drinks, and a playlist of guilty pleasures. Here are 8 of the best bars in Melbourne where you can find food, drinks and a dancefloor. Now bring on the weekend!
The Carlton Club
You can’t call yourself a Melburnian if you haven’t spent at least one night in the CBD without having left The Carlton Club. With four bars in the one building (the open-air Palmz Rooftop, the Palmz Deck, the cosy Hasti Bala and The Carlton itself), it’s a one-stop shop for cocktails, nibbles and a boogie. The drinks are strong, the menu has enough variety to keep all of your party-going crowd happy, and jungle-themed décor is OTT, making it the perfect choice for a central night out.
Making its name as a weekend institution, Public House segues from relaxed vibes into a full-on dance floor after dark, making for an awesome night that just keeps on going! If you’re there to eat, the fried chicken with house-made spicy mayo is absolutely incredible, and is the perfect snack pre-9pm dance-off, when the DJs kick in. The Richmond pub is one of the best bars in Melbourne for catching up with a group too. Cocktail jugs that we’d actually want to drink?! Hell yes!
If you’ve got that tiki-tiki feeling this Friday, get yourself to Fitzroy’s finest tiki dance venue, The LuWow on Johnston Street. Serving tasty Thai food alongside spiced rum cocktails and a host of other tropical drinks, it’s our go-to for a grass-skirt dance-athon. The LuWow also does a great line in dance classes for parties and events. Wanna know how to finally nail those ‘Single Ladies’ moves? Book in for dinner followed by a Bey Dance party and you’ll be sorted.
The Prahran Hotel
Home to some cracking tap beers, great local wines, and a killer lunch and dinner menu, the Prahran Hotel is an awesome southside bar for getting both your foodie and foot-shuffling fixes. Friday’s happy hour kicks off at 5pm, when the venue serves bargain beers and wines, with the profits going to charity, and the menu includes favourites including an epic parma and a steak sandwich we’d happily eat seven days a week. Which is lucky—the Prahran Hotel is open until late Monday through until Sunday. Sorted.
A not-for-profit Melbourne CBD bar, Shebeen is one of our favourite laneway finds. Its Thai-inspired menu includes crispy pork belly banh mi, superfood salads, and a tonne of tasty sliders, which you can enjoy with ice-cold world beers, cocktails, or even a herbal leaf tea if that takes your fancy. The Shebeen bandrom, hidden in the basement, plays host to some of the best local DJs and live acts. Grab a longneck and hit the d-floor, people!
DJs, Polish food and a whole lotta dranks…It must be Furdydurke. This hidden Melbourne CBD bar serves incredible piroshki (pastry parcels stuffed with meat and veggies), as well as hotdogs and sliders, and is an awesome venue for both chillout and party tunes. Oh, and it’s right nextdoor to shipping container bar Section 8—one of the best spots in the city if you’re keen to get your groove on in the open air.
The Bridge Hotel
Richmond bar The Bridge Hotel is home to a mouth-watering menu that’s full of dishes that make for a great start to any night out (think burgers, gnocchi, pies and tacos…basically all of our faves). The cocktail list delivers too—there’s a mean espresso martini and a tasty Pimms cup on there!—and, when the kitchen closes, the music’s turned up, ready for some pulling shapes. Just avoid the cobbled laneway running through this Melbourne bar. Cobbles + heels = Sadness.
Spinach and feta dumplings, tins of Brooklyn Lager, and a whoooole lot of droppin’ low pretty much sums up CBD bar, Boney. If you’re thinking of having a quiet one or two after work on a Friday, Boney is definitely not a safe option. The fact that this place hosts both hip-hop karaoke AND Twerkshop (yes, a twerking workshop) tells you everything you need to know. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, folks!
