Game of Rhones Returns to Melbourne

By Susannah George - 09 Jun 2014

Batten down the hatches – wine is coming!

Okay, so the return of 2013's popular wine event, Game of Rhones, probably won't send the masses hyperventilating with anticipation quite like its on-screen counterpart. But we're betting that it's going to be just as juicy! So brace yourself for Saturday the 14th of June, as Game of Rhones is nearly upon us!

After its sell-out start in 2013, this year's Game of Rhones promises to be even more action-packed when it lands in Melbourne after turns in Adelaide and Brisbane. Some of the best wine producers, hailing from kingdoms near and 'beyond the wall', are sure to send a fever pitch through wine-lovers. Think Torbreck, Tscharke, Rhone Valley and Voyager Estate, battling it out in a combative celebration of the classic grape varieties of the Rhone Valley in France, including the luscious likes of Shiraz, Carignan and Marsanne – just to name a few.

But if that hasn't gotten you hanging off the edge of your seat yet, we're bringing a plot twist that's more tangled than Drogo's mane. Not only will Game of Rhones guests get to taste some of these wine-maker's most interesting wines, they'll see them frocked up as GOT characters.

Along with the 'torture chamber' (a 2013 highlight) opening its doors again to participants to be 'blinded' for tastings, the Rhone Bar is a new addition for this year's event. Manned by some of the individual cities' best sommeliers, wine-lovers will be able to sip on and purchase quality wine at exceptional prices. So pass us a goblet or two!

Game of Rhones guests will be able to taste and choose their favourite variety, style and region of wine by casting their votes on iPads throughout the venue, plus they can also rate and purchase wines they've tasted on the tailored Game of Rhones app.

For hungry Game of Rhones goers, hearty fare from Melbourne's Burn City Smokers will be on hand to soak up the vino, while Two Birds Brewing and Yarra Valley's Napolene Cider will also be showcasing their beer and cider.

So gamers, get ready to savour a whole lot of elegant flavours characteristic of the best wines Australia, and the world, has to offer.
