Gluten-Free Hot Cross Buns | Our Pick

With Easter just around the corner, I suspect most people are already over the hot cross buns and Easter eggs that have lined supermarket shelves since about two days after Christmas.

You might think that fruit or choc chip is your biggest decision, but for the gluten intolerant among us, hot cross buns are a delicacy that must be ordered in advance and only become available in the month before Easter Sunday.

Here are the hot spots around Melbourne (and a bit beyond!) where you can pick up the best gluten-free hot cross buns. Bon appetit!

$3.50 each
A square bun that has been cut from a batch, don't let appearances deceive you. This large bun is filling and flavoursome, with a somewhat cake-like density and stickiness.

Fatto a Mano | 228 Gertrude Street in Fitzroy

$9.50 - $11.55 for 6
If you want the joy of choice, Black Ruby, in conjunction with Gluten Free 4U, has created a fructose friendly choc chip hot cross bun, and a dairy and yeast-free traditional fruit bun. They also have a fruit-free variety! A hearty gluten-free hot cross bun perfect for a mid morning snack!

Black Ruby Bakeries | 841 High Street in Thornbury
Gluten Free 4U | 5 / 1-3 Bignell Road & 1345 Burke Road in Kew
$13.00 for 6 pack
A bun that is as light and fluffy as the ones you remember from your pre gluten-free days, these muffin shaped hot cross buns take the prize for most like the 'real thing'. Sultanas and spice and all things nice. My favourite!!

The Healthy Loaf | 50 Kinlock Street, Bell Post Hill in Geelong

$10.40 for 4 pack
A store filled with all things health and vitality centric, you could almost think the Deeks hot cross buns were good for you, though the amount of chocolate chips and sultanas in the buns would argue otherwise. Choose from traditional or choc chip varieties – these buns are delish.

The Staple Store | 19 Glen Eira Road in Ripponlea

19 Glen Eira Road, Ripponlea

$10.10 for 4 pack
The most traditional in terms of appearance and size, the Healthybake buns look great and while full of fruit, they seemed to be a little dry…  but that was easily fixed with lots of butter!

Healthy Bake | 5/36 Industrial Park Drive in Lilydale

$9.95 for 6 pack
This Malvern cafe stocks the Naturally Gluten Free hot cross buns, serving them with a cappuccino and a smile. The matisse style bun is moist and spicy, with a chewy texture.

Baked on Glenferrie | 208 Glenferrie Road in Malvern

A gluten-free mecca, you can obtain many of the brands listed here, and more.

Sunnybrook Health Store | 553a North Road in Ormond
