Is It Time to Ditch Coconut Oil?

By Sophia McMeekin - 16 Sep 2014

Apple cider vinegar has taken on a new life as the hot super food/wonder tonic on the scene, and its uses have gone well beyond greens topper. In fact, apple cider vinegar (or ACV, if you're lazy) is so darn good for you it looks set to topple coconut oil from its perch as magic-liquid of the moment.

Much like it's coconutty brethren, natural-product-loving babes have been all over this health and beauty trend for a while now, but the rest of us are just cottoning on to the many uses and benefits of apple cider vinegar

Not even the late, great Paul Newman, salad-dressing master and all-round legend, could have predicted that this humble salad adornment could be so useful and beneficial, beyond being a cracking condiment.

To help you make the move from lunch-accompaniment to health tonic, here are 5 uses for apple cider vinegar to try, other than eating it.

1. It cures hair woes

Are your strands frizzy? Lacking shine? In need of some serious deep conditioning? Apple cider vinegar is your guy. While it might sound counterintuitive, the acidic nature of ACV keeps your strands soft, supple, shiny, and healthy. How? Apple cider vinegar removes build-up and brings your hair back to its natural state of balance. Hot tip: ACV is also an antifungal, so is great for dandruff, which is ace, 'cause no-one likes a flaky scalp, amiright?

2. You can clean your house with it

Another use for apple cider vinegar is as an anti-bacterial, and it can be used for low-grade cleaning jobs, like wiping down bench tops and sterilising (and de-odorising) your fridge. No more chemicals for you!

3. It's great for your skin

Apple cider vinegar has many a dermal benefit, and can be used to replace the 'toner' step in your skin care regime. Dilute the ACV with two parts of water and apply to the face with a cotton pad. As well as leaving your skin super soft, it absorbs excess oils and helps fight fine lines by restoring your skin to its proper pH and preventing future damage. Win?

4. Whiten your teeth with it!

The gentle acids of apple cider vinegar are great for attacking stubborn stains on teeth. For an intense result, apply the cider directly to your teeth then rinse quick smart, or dilute with water and make an apple-cider mouth wash for a gentle brightening. Warning: don't apply undiluted apple cider vinegar to your chompers too often or you could damage your enamel (der).

5. It's great for your gut

Ok, so this one does involving eating it, but it's not for the flavour this time. One of the benefits of apple cider vinegar is that it's reported to help with heartburn and digestive issues, while also promoting digestion. To feel the tummy benefits, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to hot water or tea.

Watch your back, coconut oil!
