Lûmé to Open in South Melbourne

Look out fine diners, there’s a new kid on the block! To say we’re excited about the coming-soon South Melbourne restaurant Lûmé, would be enough of an understatement to send foodies into fits. 

Set to open in May, this delicious new degustation spot on Coventry Street is put together by a pretty fabulous crew. Headed by Shaun Quade (Royal Mail Hotel, Biota, Quay and Bar Nacional) and John Paul Fiechtner (Le Chateaubriand in Paris and Bo Innovation in Hong Kong) in the kitchen, and star Sommelier Sally Humble serving up the sips, this is one lean, mean, (totally awesome) dream team.

Foodies, start hyperventilating. The sensational offering (currently dinner, with lunch to be determined) will be a modern tasting menu featuring 18-courses of clean and fresh flavours (at a total value-for-money price of $140-$180!). Quade and Fiechtner describe the tastes as ‘an expression of the seasons that we leave to the individual to interpret in his or her own way.’ They promise the Lûmé menu to be ‘thought provoking, interactive, fun, relaxed and for the guest to be made present through their meal by being challenged.’

Studio Y in St Kilda have fitted out the joint, with the style echoing a natural, feminine and earthy ambience. Think copper and exposed brick. The lads say ‘we want it to look like it has always been there and that it’s comfortable. A place where you can relax and forget about the outside world for a couple of hours.’ And with the hints we’re getting of the food to be dished up at Lûmé, we sure know what we’ll be focusing on (what outside world?)!

This all sounds great, you’re thinking, but what will make Lûmé one of Melbourne’s best restaurants, you ask? Quade and Fiechtner point out that this initiative is all about creating a restaurant that embodies a uniquely contemporary Melbourne. With an idea ‘to bring together young hospitality professionals, by providing a platform for our ideas in a creative and collaborative forum.’ Their master plan is to embody the modernity of the city we live in, from the cooking, to the reflection of the surroundings and the artisan industries based in Melbourne and Victoria. 

Well, we support that plan whole-heartedly, so excuse us while we wait with bated breath until May!
