Melbourne’s Best Costume Shops | Halloween Edition

By Hannah Valmadre - 26 Oct 2014

Halloween is right around the corner, and at The Urban List we believe you're never to old for dress ups. Whether you want to slather yourself with fake blood for an all-out gore fest, or throw on some animal ears and corset a la Mean Girls, Melbourne's costume shops have exactly what you're searching for, and a whole lot more.

A quick heads up, if you're planning to drop in and try on a few costumes, most places recommend that you come around an hour before closing time, so they can help you create the best outfit possible. Here are a few of the best costume shops in Melbourne, bound to make your Halloween as spooky, or as sexy, as you desire.

ROSE CHONG | FITZROY

We have to start with these guys because they are magnificent in every sense of the word. Rose Chong's collection of fancy dress costumes, vintage couture, and industry hire gear is all top notch, and the stylists who work there will help you put your outfit together. They also do wig styling for those looking to go the extra mile with their outfit.

CENTRE STAGE COSTUMES | BRUNSWICK EAST

This is a great place if you need to find something fast, whether it's a whole outfit or the finishing touches to your already-fabulous costume. If you are interested in going down the Zombie Apocalypse path, Centre Stage have put together a Zombie Make-Up Kit, and also a Special Effects Kit for those who take their trick or treating very seriously.

THE COSTUME SHOP | SOUTHBANK

This fancy dress parlour has something to suit every budget this Halloween. The Costume Shop have custom built costumes made in house, an array of vintage pieces that stylists will help you pull together, and also a range of commercially produced pieces for those looking for something a bit cheaper and easier. Their online photo gallery is great to check out to get some ideas.

COSTUME FACTORY MELBOURNE | MELBOURNE CBD

Also known as Fancy Dress Melbourne, this hidden treasure chest of dress ups is tucked away in Hardware Lane and well worth a visit if you're still trying to decide what to go as. It's one of Melbourne's best costume shops for time-poor CBD workers, excellent for picking up last minute wigs and accessories on your lunch break.

BAM BAM VINTAGE | WILLIAMSTOWN

As the name suggests, Bam Bam have been selling everything from retro furniture and antiques to clothes and vinyl records for quite some time. They specialise in authentic 70s and 80s fashion in particular, but have decided to add costumes to their mix, and their collection grows weekly. Their opening hours also change occasionally so it's worth calling to confirm times.

HEIDELBERG FANCY DRESS COSTUME HIRE | RESERVOIR

These guys are excellent if you're after some comedic value with your costume, as they stock everything from costumes to morph suits to onesies, as well as wigs and other novelty items. Heidelberg Fancy Dress Costume Hire also have a brilliant 'couples' section of costumes that will help you convince your friend/partner to gussy up and party with you this Halloween.

MISS KITTY'S COSTUMES | ST KILDA

No list of Melbourne costume shops would be complete without Miss Kitty. From Abba to a Zebra and everything in between, these guys should have you covered when it comes to fancy dress festivities. There are plenty of costumes both for hire and to sell here, so if you see something that really takes you're fancy, it can be yours forever.

MASQUERADE COSTUMES | KEW

Whatever the era you want to go from, whatever the occasion, there will be  fancy dress option for you at Masquerade Costumes. Everything from Traxedos (needs to be seen to be believed) to Game of Thrones pieces and of course, Halloween kit. Thankfully their website is very easy to navigate and costumes are rigorously catagorised, meaning you spend less time wandering aimlessly through clothes racks and you can easily find exactly what you need.
