The Government Is Selling A Bunch Of Old Trams So You Can Finally Put One In Your Backyard

One thing that’s great about Melbourne is its trams. While other cities around Australia, and the world, tore up their tram lines in the 60s and 70s, Melbourne held strong and continued to run trams night and day.

Well, because we have been running trams for so long, we’ve got a bit of a surplus of old as hell trams that have been sitting in a shed in Newport—and now the government wants to sell them to you.

VicTrack is opening an Expression Of Interest process so that all of us—businesses, or even tram-fanciers—can own our own piece of Melbourne’s transport history.

The trams up for sale art not suitable to hit Melbourne’s network as they don’t meet modern safety and accessibility requirements. Extreme sad face.

Think of all the things you could do with your very own W Class tram. Given Melbourne’s current housing crisis you could even put one in your parent's backyard and live in the bloody thing.

The EO is open between Monday 28 May, and Friday 6 July. This is the only time you can apply to get your hands on a tram.

Once live the application form will live here.

VicTrack has chucked a few handy FAQs on this page.
