As you might have gathered by now, I will do virtually anything for a good cocktail. So when a friend tipped me off about Melbourne’s latest secret cocktail bar serving up retro classics hidden behind a laneway take-away pizza shop, but wouldn’t give me the essential deets, I was all “gimme the address and codeword, you cocktail information withholding miser!” Alas, no dice.
So, off I set on the rainiest Wednesday evening that Melbourne’s seen since the beginning of its latte-loving life, in search of a mind-blowingly good cocktail and a New York slice—which is basically heaven, right? Guess what, you guys?! I FOUND IT! Yup, it’s true: Melbourne’s newest hidden bar is a drop-dead gorgeous secret room, complete with booths, DJ decks, and a menu that’s chockfull of boozy gems, hidden behind the tasty guise of Meyers Lane pizza shop. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce the aptly named Pizza Pizza Pizza.
Run by the team behind the now defunct Mr Big Stuff, Pizza Pizza Pizza itself is a bonafide, no-frills take-away that keeps CBD cheese-and-carb loving punters topped up with their favourite snack. But ask the slice-serving team for a secret menu *wink-wink*, or talk them into showing you the back kitchen, and you’ll be whisked away into a speakeasy filled with hard spirits and good times.
Currently nameless, the back bar takes the traditional approach to cocktail culture, complete with cosy booths, chilled tunes and table service. Indulge in your favourite guilty pleasures (I’LL HAVE TWENTY PINA COLADAS PLEASE) or try a twist on a classic, thanks to the expert staff who have served top liquor all over the world. And, if you’re feeling peckish, you can always order a freshly made slice or two to your table, courtesy of the on-site pizza ovens. Seriously, why would you want to leave this place?!
Want to be one of the first to check out this brand new Melbourne hot-spot? Head to Meyers Lane in Melbourne CBD from Wednesday to Saturday, and look for the neon Pizza Pizza Pizza sign, then have your best poker face ready for bargaining your way into the secret drinking den. And if they ask any questions, tell them Clare sent you.
