Trust David Walsh and the Mona team to always shock you when they’re announcing a new project.
A new catamaran for Hobart’s biggest tourist attraction may not seem like news, but in true Mona style, this one is a little bit out there.
Launching today at Hobart’s Brooke Street Pier, the Mona Roma 2 (MR-II) will replace the smaller MR-0 with more capacity, and better services for those travelling from Hobart’s CBD out to Mona.
The catamaran is themed after an evil billionaire’s lair, with gold covering almost every surface—including the toilet—along with plush red carpet, velvet chairs, and booths to relax in during your trip.
There are 3 bars on board the MR-II, along with a full galley. They have employed 5 additional staff over the MR-0 to run this piece of machinery.
“For around one month in summer, we’ll be trialling a ‘flexi ticket’. This flexi ticket will mean there will be no need to book a departure time, allowing more opportunity for spontaneity. We’re also going to offer an 'After Hours Five Buck Ferry’ which will leave Hobart at 7pm."
"So, you'll be able to cruise out to dinner at Mona's restaurants, in a catamaran in the style of an evil billionaire's lair, for less than an overpriced soy latte. Do it, there's even a gold toilet.” Said Mona’s Directory of Marketing and Communications Robbie Bramall.
MR-II hits the Derwent as of this weekend.
