The count down is over, Melbourne burger fiends, as Motorhome Majestic throws open its doors today to deliver epic burgers, hard shakes and doughnut ice-cream burgers to the fine folk of Ascot Vale.
We popped along to the opening last night and are happy to report that the latest venture from the unstoppable Josh Lefers does not disappoint: from the good time vibes and retro styling, to the cocktails on tap, and dem mighty fine burgers.
With a menu created by Melbourne meat-and-bun maestro Dani Zeini (Royal Stacks, Grand Trailer Park Taverna et al), fans of Lefers’ sibling venues Grand Trailer Park Taverna and Truck Stop Deluxe will welcome the reappearance of some of their faves (hellooo Bacon Bacon), as well as new additions like the gut-busting Walter White, featuring a beef patty, double cheddar, crunchy coleslaw, FRIED CHICKEN, tangy mayo and Walter’s secret BBQ sauce. How is this real life?!
Because stomach space is sadly a limited resource and we had eyes for the dessert station, we kept our burger bingeing to the McDowell – a whopping tower of two beef patties, three layers of toasted white burger bun, butter lettuce (because, health), double cheddar, double Swiss and creamy, dreamy McDowell sauce. We have no more words.
Also on the Motorhome Majestic menu are finger-lickin’ delights such as the super tender pork ribs with smoky BBQ sauce, and perfectly seasoned crispy fried chicken. Add chilli cheese fries, onion rings and mac n cheese croquettes to the mix and watch the clean eating/ low Fodmap crew run screaming.
The venue itself is a double-storeyed love letter to the home-on-wheels, with Pepto-Bismol walls that bring to mind Barbie’s deluxe campervan. From the unassuming street frontage, you enter into a well-executed kitschy playground, replete with deconstructed motorhomes forming cosy booths, picnic benches, rainbow walls, and an open-air courtyard for warm weather munching.
As for the drinks, there’s the Bulldog – a Corona and tequila cocktail – espresso martinis and margaritas on tap, and of course those famous spiked shakes. The Kinder Surprise was doing the rounds last night – a mouth-watering blend of Nutella, Frangelico and Baileys topped with the “surprise” – prompting our new favourite plus one to plead “give me your eggs!”
The dessert station was doing a roaring trade in waffles, doughnuts and ice-cream (care of 7 Apples), with a selection of calorific toppings. We went with salted caramel ice-cream wedged between two freshly-made, perfectly warm doughnuts, and can confirm it broke the yum-o-meter.
And in case you simply can’t miss an episode of Australia’s Got Talent? The do takeaway. With booze.
