We like to think of Melbourne as Australia’s New York (Sydney, you can be Los Angeles if you want). It makes sense, right? Property is inflated, we’re quietly smug, there’s lots to eat, and both cities hurtles along at a breakneck pace.
Well, the State Government obviously agrees, because they just announced a MEL&NYC Festival, launching in June, to celebrate the connections between Melbourne and New York City.
The festival will run until August this year, taking over numerous Melbourne venues and event spaces.
The NGV is obviously running its new MoMA exhibition at the same time (along with Friday Night Jazz Sessions), but we’re also getting Ilana Glazer (from Broad City) doing stand-up at Hamer Hall, Regina Spektor rocking a live concert at The Arts Centre, plus secret pop-up music performances in laneways across the city (you can register to find out the latest here).
Hungry for more? Some of New York’s top restaurants are coming out to collab with local venues. Think Momofuku Ko X Marion and Four Horsemen X Embla. Yep, Momofuku is actually coming to town. Gird your loins (tickets for that one go on sale June 4)
