The mammoth brick gates of Pentridge Prison lit up at night.

You may or may not be aware that Coburg’s former prison, Pentridge, has been undergoing a massive redevelopment. And today, the news comes that a major part of the new Urban Village will comprise of a 15-screen cinema.

Currently, Pentridge Cinema has an opening date as early as December this year, and they’ve already locked in several titles for the opening: Coming 2 America, Death on the Nile and Free Guy featuring Ryan Reynolds all screening via state-of-the-art digital projection and  Dolby Atmos surround sound.

Behind the project is Palace Cinemas, whose credentials in Melbourne include Palace Westgarth, The Kino, Palace Cinema Como and the grand Astor Theatre. Their latest venue, Pentridge, will share similarities in both the calibre of Hollywood and indie films on show, as well as the fact the prison come picture house will also hold a booze licence—adding to the experience are reclining chairs with their own tables and footrests in all 15 auditoriums.

You can keep up to date with the latest news coming from Pentridge Cinema here or via the venue’s Instagram account, @pentridgecinema.
