Once again, we face the bittersweet moment of bidding farewell to what is arguably Melbourne’s favourite takeaway joint, Rocco’s Bologna Discoteca, to make way for their permanent venue, Poodle. Before the salutations are exchanged, however, Head Chef Josh Fry is calling in a stacked line-up of Melbourne chefs who will be slinging their own version of a Rocco’s sandwich via their takeaway hotline.
They have, of course, dubbed it with an expectedly Rocco’s title: the ‘Bunga Bunga Party’ will take place from Friday 9 October to Sunday 11 October, and it’ll feature guest sandwiches from Nick Stanton of Leonard’s House of Love, Meatsmith’s Chris Watson, and The Lincoln’s Zac Shearer.
Highlights include, but certainly aren’t limited to Watson’s pepperoni pizza melt, while Stanton will resurrect a version of the Ramblr classic, the kimchi & cheese toastie on a croissant loaf.
Fry will also be flexing his sandwich skills with a one-off Bunga Bunga special called The Grandissimo which features cacciatore salami, Western Plains mortadella, coppa di testa, cime di rapa, marinated eggplant, giardiniera, marinated peppers and provolone picante in a house-made focaccia. It’s big. Very big.
While the Bunga Bunga Party will only last a weekend, you’ll most likely be able to get your Rocco’s fix right up until Sunday 25 October depending on Stage 4 restrictions.
In the meantime, book your seat at Australia’s largest virtual dinner party.
