We don’t mean to alarm you, but Melbourne’s biggest cheese festival is back with an extra gooey vengeance.
Hosted by Melbourne’s oldest and most iconic markets, Prahran Market’s annual 'Say Cheese' festival is returning on Sunday 28 October and we are already mentally prepping to eat our weight in sweet, sweet, dairy.
If you didn’t already know, this place is a mecca for foodies. Melburnians travel far, wide and frequently to get in on the droolworthy action that is Prahran Market. So, with street cred that legit, you know a cheese festival of theirs is going to be damn good.
Set to be bigger and better than last year, we’ve got the inside scoop on what to look out for this year.....
Grilled Cheese Showdown
Perhaps the greatest feat of all at Say Cheese is a Melbourne first: The Prahran Market Grilled Cheese Invitational sponsored by Maker & Monger. That’s right, an invitation only grilled-cheese-off between some of Melbourne’s greatest Chefs, and judged by the legendary Karen Martini, Adam D'Sylva, Dan Stock and King of the Cheese Toastie, Anthony Femia.
Competitors will have $100 to buy their ingredients at Prahran Markets with 20 minutes to craft their delicious creation in front of a live audience, so the pressure is well and truly on. This ain't no basic scoring system either, the delectable toasties will be judged on their name, creativity and sensory elements.
In the running for the highly coveted trophy include David Moyle from Longrain, Christy Tania from Glacé, Kay-Lene Tan from Tonka, Michael Greenlaw from The Westin, Victor Liong from Lee Ho Fook and a wild card entry! The best part is that anyone can enter for a chance to compete in Melbourne’s ultimate cheese grill-off! So make sure you’re in it to win it, because let’s be real, the only trophy ever worth winning in life is a grilled cheese trophy, amirite? For more details on how to enter, click here.
Meet Your Maker
Taste Australia's (and some of the world’s) most delicious cheeses with artisans and provedores out in force and all under one roof, armed with delicious samples to try, endless varieties to buy and their lifetime of cheesy knowledge to impart.
At the market’s delicatessens, you can expect mouth-watering specialist ranges as well as cheese-inspired dishes from iconic Melbourne eateries. You can expect saganaki, Greek-style chips with feta, artisanal cheesy desserts by Glace, arancini, pizza, cheesy breads and pastries, cheese Kranskies and burgers, empanadas, cheese boards and charcuterie, to name just a few. Long story short, prepare for an overdose of dairy.
The deliciousness continues with Vin di Vino offering Prosecco, Aperol Spritz, Hawkers Beer and Bloody Good Drop Wines on the day, with even more delish bevvies available at Wilson & Market and Egnaro.
Demos From Cheese Royalty
As far as we’re concerned, the best kind of royalty is cheese royalty, so we’re glad to say that the who’s who of the cheese world will be in attendance, giving you all the oozey, sharp and crumbly inside goss.
Some of the cheese celebs include world-renowned cheese connoisseur Will Studd, Maker & Monger’s Anthony Femia and TV Chef Tobie Puttock. Also make sure not to miss droolworthy cheese merchant Milk the Cow, our mates from the legendary 48h Pizza and Moondarra Cheese to name just a few.
