Smith & Daughters to Open Deli

By Pip Jarvis - 02 Apr 2015

Get excited, Listers—everyone’s favourite vegan vamps are opening a shiny new Melbourne deli! That’s right, the dynamic I-am-woman tattooed duo behind Brunswick Street’s vegan dining sensation, Smith & Daughters, are set to open Smith & Deli this month.

The non-vegan’s favourite meat-free Melbourne restaurant, Smith & Daughters has done a rip-roaring trade in Latin-inspired vegan cuisine (and killer cocktails) since opening just over a year ago. Suffice to say, we’re as excited as a faux-frog-in-a-sock about this new Melbourne opening!

Co-owner, Mo Wyse says of the new venture, ‘When we opened Smith & Daughters, we knew that there would be multiple manifestations of this little vegan empire we want to create. Everything that we do is part of this larger goal of being a point of difference in the plant-based community. Convenience, and a shop front with easy to grab, take away provisions and meals—that's just exciting. Plus Shannon always dreamt of being a shop girl, weighing things by the kilo and scanning barcodes.’

Set to be located on Fitzroy’s Moor Street, Melbourne’s new vegan deli, Smith & Deli, will be dishing up sandwiches, bagels, salads, soups, frozen meals, juices, and more. According to Mo, the stand-outs will be the specialty pastries (hello, croissants and danishes), hard cheeses, the smoked meats and shaved ham by the kilo… Say what?

No need to get het up, animal advocates—as at Smith & Daughters, the meats at Smith & Deli are mock! Breathe…

In need of a hug? The Fitzroy deli will also stock all the Jewish comfort foods you struggle to find in Melbourne—think knishes, matzo ball soup, rugelach, plus bagels from 5 & Dime, ‘because he's a good Jewish, New Jersey boy making bagels the right way’.

Mo adds, ‘It's still Shannon (Martinez—the other half of the operation and the one with the mad cooking skillz) and Mo, it's still all vegan, the back 2/3rds of the Deli will be a commercial kitchen providing food for the Deli as well as the restaurant, but everything else is different. The Deli gives Shannon the opportunity to create and create and create. She can come up with all new recipes and ideas all the time. Plus it will have a mini shop with shelves of provisions to create meals at home—complete with fresh produce, bread, pasta, milks, all the way up to full trays of frozen lasagnes for nights that you just can't be bothered to cook.’

Music to this lazy sister’s ears, Listers.

Smith & Deli is set to open late April at 111 Moor Street in Fitzroy.
