I don’t know about you, but a loooong lunch is by far my favourite of all meal options. It’s late enough in the day that you’re not bound to brunch-specific foods, but early enough that you can kick on. And on. And oooonnnn.

We’ve done our research on long lunches—possibly a little too much… And following our extensive ‘research’ into the best long lunches in Melbourne, we have a decisive winner: The Ladies Lunch at Saké, Hamer Hall

There are a few reasons that Saké takes out this prestigious prize in our eyes

The Ladies Lunch menu has been tailored specifically for its audience, meaning that it’s not too heavy and you’ll leave feeling completely satisfied. A fine line we’ve all crossed many times!

The lunch is spread out over eight courses of perfect indulgence.

Kicking things off with everyone‘s favourite finger food, Saké’s steamed edamame is lightly salted, just the way we like it.

The menu then moves in to Saké’s strength: next-level seafood. Thank the food gods that Saké’s signature dish—the kingfish with jalapeno and yuzu soy—is included. It’s the sort of dish that’ll leave you wishing that all your seafood came like that.

Next up is steamed prawn shumai. Anyone that thought ‘dumplings’ and ‘fine dining’ don’t belong in the same sentence clearly hasn’t experienced these little parcels of heaven. Dipped in a ponzu sauce, they’re everything that a dumpling aficionado would dream of.

Next up is a super tender and juicy chicken dish. Served as a dainty kebab, they couldn’t be further away from you’re stock-standard barbeque fare. They arrive lightly marinated and skewered with greens to lighten the flavour.

Eggplant has to be one of the most underrated vegetables (there’s something that you never thought you’d hear) But seriously, Japanese eggplant has to be one of our all-time favourite dishes. Slathered with a house made chicken miso paste and grilled to perfection, the eggplant flesh caramelises and becomes a gooey mixture of sweet and savoury. You’ll never look at eggplant in the same way.

As every long lunch should, Saké lightens things up with a salad seasonal leaves and pumpkin seeds. Who said you can’t make friends with salad?!

Next up is the star of the show—the bit you’ve all been waiting for: The Chefs selection sushi platter. A Japanese long lunch wouldn’t really be a long lunch without a sushi platter would it?! Think perfect inside out rolls, traditional sashimi, nigiri and sashimi. Make sure you leave room for this one.

And last, but certainly not least is dessert. Saké has a way of serving desserts that are the perfect combination of traditional and unexpected. The Nihon Nemesis is a delicate chocolate cake served with raspberry kanten matcha, raspberry sorbet and honeycomb.

With a menu like that we can’t think of a better girls afternoon out.

The very best bit? There’s a special on sparkling—six courses and a glass of sparkling for $59pp, or six courses and unlimited sparkling for two hours for $110pp. That’s a pretty easy decision, isn’t it? You can book a Ladie's Lunch at Saké Hamer Hall here.
