It’s May-hem this month, Listers, with a redonkulous number of awesome happenings across our glorious city. From the juicy new openings you need to get around, to a one-of-a-kind wedding, the coolest dance class in town, and festivals for film buffs, music lovers and frothy-fanatics, it’s one of the busiest months of the year.
We’ve done the hard yards to present to you the May MINI edition—counting down the top 10 things to do in Melbourne this month. Get involved, Listers!
10. Jasper & Jasmine: The Pug Wedding
Things are getting pugly in the lead up to the society wedding of the season, set to take place by the seaside one sunny Sunday in May (the 17th to be precise). Jasper and Jasmine will howl "I do" at St Kilda’s West Beach Bathers Pavilion, in front of their nearest and dearest bitches and hounds. They’re even inviting you! Kooky? Maybe. But it’s for a good cause people! Read more about it here. #puglyf
9. Got Beef? Entrecôte Opens Second Restaurant in the CBD
South Yarra’s sexiest Parisian-style steakhouse opens a second outpost in the old Prix Fixe spot in the CBD this month. The steaks are high in the Melbourne restaurant game, but with sauce this good and unlimited fries—yes, UNLIMITED fries—we think they’ll be more than fine.
8. Shake Your Groove Thang at Groovin the Moo
Gather your crew and take a road trip to Bendigo as Groovin the Moo returns on the 2nd of May. Bust a move to the groovy line-up, featuring the likes of Ball Park Music, Flight Facilities, The Preatures, and San Cisco.
7. Margaritas + Mexican + Skatebowl = Melbourne’s Hot New Opening
If your idea of a good time is one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor—then Beach Burrito Fitzroy will be your new favourite hang! Dishing up epic burritos, tasty margaritas and with a skatebowl to boot, get your skates on and head to Gertrude Street’s coolest new restaurant and bar.
6. Put the Fun in Thursday at Bey Dance at the LuWOW
The LuWOW is one of the most fun bars in Melbourne—fact. Beyonce is the coolest chick and best booty-shaker on the planet—another fact. We all secretly fancy being royalty—a somewhat shaky fact… Well now’s your chance to combine the three and make like Queen Bey at Melbourne’s coolest dance class.
5. Huxtaburger Hits Hawthorn
Glenferrie Road’s really moving on up in the world lately, with a bunch of our faves (Fonda, Yo-Chi) branching out into leafy Hawthorn. The Melbourne burger bosses at Huxtaburger have joined the ranks, and are opening their fourth store here this month. Yum!
4. St Kilda Film Festival
An iconic Melbourne event, St Kilda Film Festival returns to the bayside ‘burb from 21st – 30th May. If you like to think of yourself as cultured, but sitting through a feature-length flick gives you ants in your pants, this is the film fest for you. St Kilda Film Festival turns the spotlight on the short film genre, with the award winning films here eligible for entry into the Oscars.
3. Raise Your Pinkies for Mother’s Day High Tea at the Langham
Flowers are lovely, but, let’s face it, nothing really says “I love you and I’m sorry for the hell I’ve put you through for the past 30 years” quite like scones.
2. Good Beer Week’s Back!
It’s Christmas for beer brains, frothy fanatics, and ale aficionados! That’s right, Good Beer Week is back bigger and better from 16th – 24th May! There are a gazillion (not an over-exaggeration, promise) great beer-centric events happening all over town. Check out some of our top picks here, or visit the website for the full schedule.
1. Pimp Your Milkshake at BOY & Co.
Another recent opening we’re obsessed with right now is Malvern’s BOY & Co. The idea’s simple—amazing milkshakes and epic loaded fries. The chilli cheese fries are out of control and the Salty Pimp shake is seriously next level (salted caramel and coconut, y’all!). Best go during the week and within school hours as the pesky children folk love it almost as much as we do.
