Where will we be on Sunday? We’ll be strolling the Royal Exhibition Building, espresso in one hand and oversized ricotta-stuffed cannoli in the other, checking out the goods at this year’s Italian Food & Wine Festival.
Yep, Melbourne is going full Italiano this weekend, which means celebrating all of the things that end in –ucci, –ella, –ini or –ina. It’s okay if your Italian accent is a little rusty; pointing and miming extreme hunger is totally fine. This year’s line-up is pretty nuts too: look out for Johnny di Francesco (400 Gradi), Andrea Papadakis and Alberto Fava (Tipo 00) dishing up pizza and pasta just like Nonna used to make (if Nonna was an award-winning gastronomy expert), plus pop-up restaurants from Vaporetto, La Bonta, Pasta Adagio and Caterina’s Cucina.
You’ll find us camped out in front of the Small Axe Kitchen booth, munching on Lasagne al ragu ($12) and a creamy tiramisu ($8), because carb-loading in winter is a Bear Grylls-approved survival tactic. There’ll be wine masterclasses, plus tastings from some of the country’s best Italian-centric vineyards (think Tedechi, Brancala, Fuligni and 6Mura).
Need a sweetener? The Marketplace comes fully stocked with nosh from That’s Amore Cheese, Truffle Traders, 7 Apples Gelato, Saluministi and even a gluten-free gnocchi bar. Bellissimo. Mwah.
