There’s An Okonomiyaki Pop Up Coming To Melbourne

Hold onto your hats, because the world’s favourite savoury pancake is getting its own pop up in Collingwood. Fumio Tanga—the Hiroshima-born okonomiyaki master—is bringing his craft all the way to Melbourne.

Broad Island Shokudo—what this amazing pop up is called—is a collaboration between Tanga, Nick Murray, Tom Moore and Kyle Bush (of other ventures like Animals Dancing, Chuckle Park, Joey Smalls & Chuckle Deli), and will showcase authentic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki with some natural wines and local DJs thrown in.

For the uninitiated okonomiyaki translates to “how you like” or “what you like”, and is made with an initial thin crepe then topped with meat, seafood or vegetables and finished with a mixture of layers of kimchi, dried anchovies, kelp, beni shoga ginger, cabbage and bean sprouts. Broad Island will also be putting together a vegan version as well.
