Okay all you octogenarian octuplets. Let's kick things up an octave and get all octagonal on October. Seriously, we've got some premium octane lined up for this month, so make like an octopus, turn off your dvd screening of Octopussy, and check out our list of the best things to do in Melbourne this weekend.

Thursday 2nd 

Bubbles and vino your style? Lucky you, as the Sofitel is hosting an exclusive dinner at No35 this Thursday, celebrating the liquid loveliness of Champagne Taittinger and Mount Pleasant winery. With renowned winemaker Scott McWilliam and chef Martin Horsley guiding the evening, guests will be invited to partake in an indulgent five-course menu with matched wines. We wish you splendid sipping, and minimal spilling.

Tom Blachford's latest photographic exhibition features haunting streetscapes of classic Palm Springs mid-century architecture, lit by an eerie super moon. Blachford is a Melbourne based photographer, and this exhibition featuring modernist architecture is held appropriately (and uniquely) at stunning modern furniture store, Modern Times in Fitzroy. Frothy fellas and beery babes, Festival of the Frothy III is on like Donkey Kong. Run in conjunction with The Common Man, and held at their pop-up marquee in South Wharf, this beer trivia championship is sure to test the most savvy of skullers. Hosted by The Crafty Pint and Funky Bunch Trivia, this night will be full of fun, craft beer, appropriately naughty munchies, prizes and more. So form a team and do your worst!

Want more Docklands fun? As of yesterday, The Docklands Arts, Laughs and Blues Festival set up shop, featuring five days of circus, cabaret, comedy, burlesque and loads more. With live music events and a Wonderland Fun Park family day, there is plenty to fill your weekend with. Surrounded by the Harbour Town Shopping Centre and loads of bars and restaurants, why not supersize your weekend order with a shop and a meal out too!

Friday 3rd

Poultry and pinot? Octo-yes! Thanks to one of Melbourne's best bars, the Botanical in South Yarra, you can enjoy a decadent day of duck and drinks, with their Duck 'n' Pinot Lunch! With wines from Central Otago, Yarra Valley and Marlborough, wine snobs can relax, and Head Chef Lionel Abello has designed a four-course duck-themed menu that will have foodies salivating and quacking for more. Daffy impersonations are strictly inappropriate… at least until your third glass.

Oktoberfest in October? Who'da thunk it! If partying, pigging out, and prancing around in some lederhosen is your thing (and lets face it, why wouldn't it be?), then make sure you show up to Munich Brauhaus. With their Oktoberfest weekend kicking off tonight, and running until the 6th, there's so much festivity planned we're hungover just thinking about it.

Part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, All the Single Ladies is only open for two more nights! This theatre production is confronting, but entertaining. From the Cutting Room team, this performance challenges gender identity and perceptions, all to the soundtrack of Beyoncé. Not for the conservative or condescending…which is why we're going!

Okay okay, we get it – there are sooo darn many things to do in Melbourne this Oktoberfest, you have no idea where to celebrate, right? Well apart from the obvious (at all of them!), here's a reason why you should choose the European Bier Cafe on Southbank: 50. Different. Varieties of bier. With 20 on tap! Kicking off tonight, the European Bier Cafe will drink to Oktoberfest up until the 17th of October. With live bands, a take home stein and traditional German bretzel, we're definitely on board!

The Robert Burns Hotel in Collingwood turns 30 this month, and to celebrate, they are putting on food and drink specials for you lovely Listers! On Fridays, from 5pm-9pm they're offering $10 Mojitos, and from 5pm-7pm free Pinxtos with every drink purchased! So mosey on down after work and celebrate with a Mojito or three. Responsibility is on you if you decide to sing Happy Birthday and get caught on camera.

We've got chocolate and flowers on our mind—and yes, we know it's not Valentine's day just yet (sad face). Although, romantics (chocoholics) rejoice! Today, hundreds of individual chocolate flowers will be transported to the Cake & Bake Sweets Show in Melbourne—Australia's biggest event for baking and cake decorating—to attempt the world's largest chocolate flower bouquet Guinness World Record! If 900 hours of work and 100kg of chocolate isn't enough to tempt you, how about 3 days of sweet shows and a baking bonanza!

Saturday 4th

Crackers about cheese and fancy an evening of tasting and testing your knowledge? You might find it handy—and well, frankly awesome—then, that Spring Street Grocer are hosting a Cheese 101 Night! Behind the Rind, as it's so aptly named, is a fun evening where guests can learn all about cheesy histories, styles, accompaniments and more!

Get pumped for Bottle Shop Concepts Pinot Palooza! With live music, tastings galore from some of the best wine producers in Australia and New Zealand, and a people's choice award, you'll be saying 'Cabernet Sauvign-wha?'. Located at the basement car park of Circa The Prince, in St Kilda—a bigger venue than last year's St Kilda Town Hall, as this event is just too darn popular!

Held at the Regent Club on Bourke Street, the winner will be announced based on her unique look, vibrant personality and individual style. Snap (peas). Contestants will be judged on their photographic skills, runway walk, and overall image—not on the amount of makeup they're wearing! Oh how sweet (peas).

This weekend in Melbourne is all about Oktoberfest celebrations, and our friends at South Wharf Promenade are celebrating being open since 2012, with a precinct-wide Oktoberfest Festival! With all seventeen venues participating, there will be food with a German twist, keg tapping, German slap dancers, kids entertainment, live music and a dress up competition with massive prizes! A day-long festival spread along the banks of the Yarra? Sounds octo-awesome to us.

If you've ever visited Heathcote, or sipped on one of their wines, you'll be joining us in saying 'more please!'. Which is why we couldn't contain ourselves when we found out about the 2014 Heathcote Wine & Food Festival. With 50 wine, and 30 food producers offering up their goods, the choice and opportunity for tastings and treats is endless. Tasting seminars, masterclasses and live entertainment round out this weekend of family fun!

But wait… what's on in Melbourne for octogenarians, you ask?! We promised, so we deliver. The Victorian Seniors Festival starts today, with a jam-packed program of activities and entertainment. With over 1000 free or minimal-cost events, in the areas of music, theatre, sports, touring, education of meeting people, there's not enough time for your nanna nap. Today the celebration is at Fed Square all day, so grab your granny and treat her to a day out! Best grandchild status, guaranteed.
