As far as I'm concerned, a truffle is a tasty chocolate treat often prepared by Mums as an after dinner sweet or a lunchbox snack; but for those among us who are more refined, the truffle is a delicacy best enjoyed in Melbourne's top restaurants.
Otherwise known as the Diamond of the Kitchen, the technical description of the truffle is the fruiting body of a subterranean fungus, and the ingredient grows in white and black varieties, as well as summer or burgundy truffle and some lesser know species.
Most importantly, truffles taste pretty damn good, and to celebrate, the Melbourne Truffle Company is applauding Australia's position as the fourth largest truffle-producing nation with the very first Truffle Melbourne expo being held this weekend.
Over 8000 people are expected to flock to Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July to celebrate the culinary marvel that is the truffle, together with a who's who of the celebrity cooking scene.
My Kitchen Rules favourite Manu Feildel (on stage 10.30am & 3.30pm Sunday 13 July) will be joined by Vue de Monde's Shannon Bennett, Guy Grossi of Grossi Florentino (1.30pm Saturday 12 July) and TV personality Shane Delia (12.15pm Saturday 12 July). Truffle Melbourne Executive Chef and Melbourne local food icon Philippe Mouchel (2.35pm Sunday 13 July) will also be in residence to dish up the 'dirt' on truffles and the magic of this special ingredient.
Let this team of super chefs, together with their colleagues, teach you how to prepare truffles at home whilst you sample various types of truffle and watch truffle savvy dogs sniff out a winning specimen. Over $300,000 worth of truffles will be enjoyed over the two-day Truffle Melbourne festival, so you can be assured you won't go home hungry.
