Can you believe 2014 is already two months down? Neither can we. Then again, Melbourne keeps throwing jam-packed weekends at us, so really, it should come as no surprise!

This weekend in Melbourne is no different – here are our top picks of what's happening around town…

Friday 28th February

Drawing inspiration from the Rome: Piranesi's Vision exhibition, the State Library of Victoria will be hosting 'When In Rome', a lunchtime pop-up featuring woodfired pizza, gelato, and bocce. Stop by during your lunch break and marvel as the forecourt is turned into a Roman piazza.

As part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, Queensbridge Square will once again be transformed into a vibrant hub to host festival attendees. This year, the former Sandridge rail bridge will become The Immersery: Festival Kitchen, Bar and Raingarden, a unique take on the festival's 'water' theme. Featuring dishes from some of Melbourne's best chefs, The Immersery is not to be missed.

Another unmissable Melbourne Food & Wine Festival event is this weekend's restaurant pop-up at the WTC Wharf! The perfect match for the festival's 'water' theme, the WTC Wharf will be showcasing dishes from wharf restaurants Byblos, Kobe Jones, and The Wharf Hotel – nom, nom, nom! Continuing the aquatic theme is the huge screen playing movie classics such as Finding Nemo, The Beach, and Shark Tale. After you've had you fill and caught a flick, jump on the Yarra Loop water taxi service and cruise down Melbourne's most iconic waterway.

This Saturday, head to the Fairfield Amphitheatre for Feskyval – a celebration of the humble esky. The event raises funds and awareness for Kids Under Cover, a fantastic charity working with homeless youths, and will include an array of local Aussie musos plus activities aplenty. The highlight? The super fun (and funny!) Esky Race.

We won't lie – at The Urban List we are partial to a craft beer or two, which is why we're super excited about Melbourne Beerfest being held over the weekend! Grab your mates and head to Flagstaff Gardens, where you can indulge in boutique beers from Victoria's best producers and delicious food to match, plus take part in any number of tastings and masterclasses. It's astounding to hear how many stray and abandoned animals are taken in by the RSPCA each year! In a bid to educate the public and support animals without a home, the RSPCA are hosting 'In The Doghouse' – a chance for you to spend the night at their Burwood East shelter. You'll be helping the RSPCA reach their fundraising goal of $100,000, plus you'll see firsthand the amazing work the team does each and every day.

There's something about juicy, glorious meat that you Urban Listers seem to go crazy for – and with this Sunday's Meatopia event at the Middle Park Hotel, we can definitely see why! An annual street festival for those with constant carnivorous cravings, Meatopia will see pop-up marquees set up outside the Middle Park Hotel with burger impresarios Huxtaburger and Southern BBQ kings Fancy Hank's along for the meaty ride. Once you've polished off your multiple servings of meat, nosh on some Ricketts Point Ice Cream and Niccolo coffee for dessert. We're salivating already!

Another great option for carnivores is Street Market, a delicious pop-up being held by Meat Market on the South Wharf Promenade. There's something for everyone here, from 'meet the chef' sessions, grilling stations, and wine tastings for the adults, to a cute farmyard nursery for the kids. Once again, there'll be more meat than you can poke a stick (or should we say a fork!) at, so make sure you wear your stretchiest pants in preparation.
