Where to Après-Ski at Mt Buller

By Sophie Colvin - 08 Aug 2015

Food at ski resorts routinely gets a bad rap for being expensive and stodgy. Seeing as though snow season is well and truly in full swing, we thought we’d do you all a solid and investigate exactly what’s hot and what’s not up at Melbourne’s nearest ski resort, Mt Buller. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourites that serve excellent eats and drinks AND won’t burn a hole your pocket.

Tirol Cafe

You know what they say,  go where the tradies go. If you watch and learn, kids, you’ll see that Tirol Café is the venue of choice for seasoned Buller staff. Sitting pretty at the top of Shakey Knees Chairlift, this cosy Austrian-cabin style café offers amazing views of Mt Stirling. The restaurant manger, Jimmy Camerino, is a a legend of Mt Buller - famous for dishing up the best egg and bacon sourdough rolls getting around. The menu also includes fresh pasta, homemade soups and wood fired pizzas. Nab a spot on the deck on a sunny day or a warm seat inside when it’s snowing for the best dining option on the hill.

Open: 10am-4pm daily

Koflers Hutte

For a hearty refuel between ski runs, Koflers Hutte is one of our top picks. Situated high up on the slopes next to Koflers T-Bar lift, you’ll be able to grab something filling to plug the ski-induced hole in your belly – think nachos, spaghetti Bolognese and hearty soups. Koflers also does a pretty mean apple pie. How very delightful!

Hotel Pension Grimus

The Grimus family has really cornered the Mt Buller weekender market, running the Hotel Pension Grimus, which is home to Herbies Bar, Kaptans Restaurant and Grimus Grind. Herbies Bar has a legion of loyal fans and is the perfect spot to grab après-ski schnapps — they’re mandatory, right? They also serve up impressive cocktails and a comforting nightcap. What more could you want?

Kaptans Restaurant is a firm favourite with regular Buller visitors. Serving up traditional Austrian ski fields dinners, the cosy spot is famous for treating weary skiers to top-notch Austrian food and hospitality.

When it comes to coffee at the snow, it’s universally acknowledged that it can be a bit hit and miss. (This aint Chapel Street after all!) But fear not, Listers, hole-in-the-wall hot spot Grimus Grind dishes out coffee that is as good as you’ll find anywhere in Melbourne.

Pro tip: You can grab your morning coffee and hire your skis at the same time. The Grimus family also run a ski hire and maintenance business and it’s a stone’s throw from Grimus Grind.

Snow Pony

If you’re the snow bunny type who’s treating your weekend in Buller as winter’s hottest photo op, you’d best trot along to Snow Pony. Shaking things up with the best cocktails on the slope, warm your cockles with a Winter Warmer of spiced gold rum, apple cider and all things nice. We’ll take three, thanks.

The Enzian

Open from 4:00pm, The Enzian is well versed in this après-ski caper and will fix you up with something strong, tout suite. If you’re looking for somewhere quieter for dinner, this place ticks all the boxes. It’s not the swankiest place on the hill, but there's a new chef on board and and he's dishing up some truly delicious food - you'll need to book in advance for Saturday dining.
