Are you experiencing a career rut? Or worse still, a glut in your social life now winter is upon us? Fear not! The Carlton on Bourke Street has just the remedy in The Bar Dream – your once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity to own your own bar for four weekends in July!

Inspired by the pokey, five by five-metre bars in Tokyo's Golden Gai, The Carlton is handing over six of its former backpacker rooms on the fourth floor to six creative geniuses, who are being encouraged by owner, Tracey Lester, to "Have fun, make money and have your own kind of party for four weeks".

Tracey explained, "We'd always intended to do small bars, but I thought as a cool and creative idea rather than a commercial venture for us, it would be good to open it to the general public.

"Everyone at some point dreams about having their own bar, so we thought we'd give people a chance to live their dream."

Winners will receive everything they need to get started including the space; $500 towards fit out; a security guard, supervisor and bus boy; a two-hour planning session with The Carlton's management team; and a three-hour training session to gain the Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.

To enter The Bar Dream, prospective proprietors are asked to develop a 500-word creative submission describing their ultimate 'Bar Dream' by Friday, 13 June. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to pitch their concept to an expert panel of judges before the six lucky winners are notified on 19 June.

Tracey's number one tip to make your bar dream come true is: "Be as crazy and out there as you can with your ideas.

"It's basically an art project rather than a commercial project. We're after creative rather than qualified to give customers 'wow'."

Applications for The Bar Dream must be submitted on The Carlton website.
