New month, new must-see exhibit at the NGV.

On the first of November, Australia’s first-ever exhibition dedicated to fashion from Comme des Garçons will be landing at NGV.

The omnipresent drawn-heart logo may be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Comme des Garçons. But it’s fair to say that your inner fashion nerd would love to know that there is loads more to the high-fashion brand which found its footing in the 1970s than you might think.

Since launching in 1969, season after season, the label’s founder and creative director Rei Kawakubo has ‘deconstructed’ garment shape and function through her designs, reframing preconceived ideas of beauty and inventing a new relationship between body and dress.

The free exhibition titled “Collecting Comme” has been made possible through the generous gifting of garments previously owned by collector, Takamasa Takahashi, also supported by additional loans from his personal archive.

In total there will be over 50 outfits from over 40 collections on show.

Kawakubo is one of fashion’s most visionary and influential fashion designers and businesswomen in the industry today, making this one exhibit not to be missed.
