How To Have The Most Action-Packed Week in Melbourne

When I spoke to the good folk at KFit about writing this article, I put out a full disclaimer: I’m not the sporty type. I wish I was. I wish I was trendy and fit and had matching gym outfits and thoroughly enjoyed green smoothies. But I don’t. So I need all the goddamn encouragement that I can get. This is where I thought KFit might just be my lifeline as I’d be able to nab a friend and take them along for the ride.

Day 1

I’d downloaded the KFit app (for freeee!) a few days prior and had had a browse of the classes on offer. I settled on a spin class at Cycle Collective in Richmond, (reasoning that it’d be a gentle introduction) and then flicked the reservation to my friend, who was more than a bit excited at the prospect of venturing outside of her normal fitness routine.

Off we trotted to our spin class where we chose bikes up the back and tried to look inconspicuous.  It started at an enjoyable pace but then it turned into a race and there were hill climbs and I realised I’d been kidding myself about my base-level fitness. But I’m super competitive, so onwards I peddled. Our instructor was encouraging and chirpy in all the right ways and there was a DJ and an absolutely cracking view, so I daresay we’ll be back. Off we went to treat ourselves to breakfast smoothies on Swan Street.

Day 2

I browsed the shiny little KFit app and settled on something a bit more zen than the day before:  yoga at Yoga XTC in South Yarra. I composed an extremely enticing message and had two friends joining me in a jiffy.

Now, before we get into deets of the actual class, can I just take a moment to rave about the studio. There was soft light, clean wood and excellent music. It was warm and inviting, and I kinda regretted not taking my nap-time pillow.

We bend and stretch and do yoga-ry things that I’m guessing real yoga people do. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, got big thumbs up and the three of us agreed that Yoga XTC will get a second visit.

Day 3

It’s Wednesday and I planned to stay at a friend’s house for the sole purpose of watching The Bachelor, meaning it was a chance to venture outside my usual suburbs and try some new activities. Before settling in for a night in front of the TV, my host friend and I squeezed in a quick sesh at Apparatus in the CBD, where we gave the TRX suspension thingamajig a bit of a whirl.

Our instructor had us contorting and swinging and lunging and holding more than I knew possible and I’m 86% positive that I could feel my abs growing. But it could just be belly-hurt from laughing at my host friend who is even worse at this than I am. (Finally I picked right, she’ll be getting a second call-up.)

Our instructor was fabulous and enthusiastic and I think I’d like to invite him for cocktails after. But then I remember that he’s a personal trainer and he’s probably not going to condone my mid-week drinking

Day 4

I needed some time alone, so I followed my lifelong motto of ‘treat yo self’ and hopped on to the KFit app to book myself in to The Orchard for a sweat-sesh in their infra-red sauna.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this, but the cosy booth, the lack of clothing and the dim lighting had me feeling right at home in no time. The temperature in my little cocoon was cranked right up and I could feel all the white wine toxins, pouring from my pores. It was the perfect way to end a day.

Day 5

It’s day five, and I’m a bit crushed that I don’t resemble Elle yet, but I’m starting to get in to the swing of things and am quite enjoying picking and choosing my next activity. I phoned my fittest friend the night before to lock in Friday’s exercise. We agreed that Friday nights are sacred, so settled on a morning class at KettlebellX Training sesh in South Melbourne.

Off we trot for 45 minutes of kettle bell lifting (possibly not the technical term?!) and a full body workout that had my whole core high-fiving me. The team at KettlebellX were understanding of my shortfalls and were stellar at correcting my technique so that I was always lifting safely.

Our training session catch-up spilled over in to a quick breakfast at a nearby cafe – so many to choose from in South Melbourne!

Day 6

It’s Saturday. I rounded up the girls who all downloaded the KFit app and signed up for a free Saturday morning Pilates Flow class at The Habitat Space in Malvern East.

There was a bit of a gaggle of us and the instructor didn’t look entirely thrilled when we proceeded to whisper to each other, but it wasn’t long before we were focused on the moves at hand. After an hour of pilates, we topped it off with savasana (the little sleep bit at the end and the main reason I like pilates) before filing out and heading for brunch.  

Day 7

I was due to catch up with a friend who I regularly go walking with on weekends, but it was raining. Never fear, I had the perfect alternative.

We both jumped on to the KFit app and booked in to the Cliffhanger Climbing gym. Neither of us have a lot of rock climbing experience, but we had an absolute ton of fun spider-monkey-ing around the place for the afternoon. The climbs vary in difficulty and it was great to get out and about, trying things we had no idea that Melbourne had to offer.

This week of fun, varied and freeeee exercise has made me realise that exercising with friends is: A. Infinitely more fun than exercising alone; B. Forces you to actually show up; And C. Is more or less just as good as catching up over a bowl of pasta and glass of red.
