In a cosy little log cabin in Fitzroy, graced with deer pelts and the kind of freshly sawn wood smell that would make Ron Swanson proud, we have discovered a new kind of gelato. Gelato spiked with Sriracha flaked almonds. Gelato with candied bacon strips sticking out the top. Basically, gelato heaven–for anyone who isn’t on a diet, that is.
If Melbourne ever had a soul sister it would surely be Portland, Maine–and as if to prove it conclusively, the pine tree state has delivered the latest pop up to grace our fair city: Gelato Fiasco. I mean, their website features a beardy hipster in a flannelette shirt, so there’s that.
We popped into the Log Cabin on Johnston St in Fitzroy to check out the offering–which will only be delivering pimped up gelato to Melburnians for six weeks, until September 11.
We tried all four flavours on offer: First up was the chocolate gelato, with whiskey syrup and sriracha flake coated almonds, topped with chocolate chilli shards and a raw chilli. The choc chilli flavour combination is a well-trodden path, but throw that whiskey in? The warmth is twofold.
Next up was what I would now like to call my breakfast gelato (yes, that’s a thing I’m pretty sure?) The pancake flavoured gelato with lashings of smokey maple syrup and bacon flavoured candies comes with a pair of bacon strips stuck unceremoniously into the top–so of course it was my favourite. After two whole scoops however? It gets pretty full on.
Also a contender in the breakfast gelato game is the peanut butter gelato with salted choc pretzels and peanut butter swirl. It’s simple and delicious–and definitely a step up from my personal Kraft Crunchy obsession.
Last up in the lineup is their take on a time old favourite: choc chip mint. The Fiasco version sees mint flavoured gelato and chunks of chocolate brownie swimming between drippings of chocolate sauce. I don’t even like mint, and it almost swayed me.
With only five-odd weeks left of our new favourite Melbourne pop up, you’d better get in quick–but if you can’t bear the lines, you can always pick up a tub of any of these awesome flavours at 7/11. It doesn’t come with quite the Instagrammability factor though, does it?
Gelato Fiasco is open at 82 Johnston St, Fitzroy until 11 September, on Thursday and Friday from 4pm–11pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 2pm–11pm.
