When you're little, everyone in the street is your best friend. I remember I taught our neighbours from across the road how to rollerblade in exchange for using their pool on the weekend. The lady at the end of the street always used to let me play with her dog, and the two houses on either side of ours used to come over for huge dinner parties. It's the love of the street and the similarities of our direct environment that makes us connect with the people who share it – making our homes all the more special for it.
If you're feeling a bit nostalgic for those simple times, the Spring Fling Festival is a celebration of the community love we all have stored inside us, multiplied by a billion. The localities of Melbourne's North and West have collaborated for the past 35 years along Errol Street in North Melbourne, attracting over 15,000 people with 120 stalls and over 100 volunteers in 2012. On October 20th, local traders, schools, community and cultural groups will all come together to bring you a jam-packed program.
This year's theme explores our community as an 'urban village', seeing what connects us to North and West Melbourne and defines it as a desirable place to live, work and play. Locals will be providing the goods with a pop-up urban forest, a dog show, food trucks, bling-your-bike workshops, and beanbags and lounges to recline on in the sun.
The forecast for the weekend is 27 degrees and blazing, so don't be afraid to join in the fun if you're a Southsider or an Eastender; all points of the compass are welcome to join in the fun for a day full of entertainment, workshops, food, market stalls, demonstrations and giveaways.
