Ahh, the humble steak night. Nothing brightens up a mid-week session like getting a massive porterhouse, chips, salad and a pot for under $20 (or even $15 in some glorious cases). Meat and money on the same plate, that’s what we’re talking about.

There’s probably about 10,000 steak nights in Melbourne, but these are some of our personal faves. Good value and tender beef, together at last. Just cover us with mushroom sauce and let’s get started.

Monday Steak Nights

The Builders Arms

The Builders Arms in Fitzroy just launched a new Monday steak night with some serious sizzle. You get a 250g Meatsmith porterhouse (shiiiiiit), chippies, salad and a very smashable wine.

Cost: $19
When: From 5:30pm
For more info, click here.

Temperance Hotel

Monday’s can be rough, but this helps: chef’s cut of beef, chips, salad and a beer/wine/cider for just $18 at Temperance Hotel. This one runs every Monday and Tuesday, but you often need to book. It gets pretty popular.

Cost: $18
When: Mondays & Tuesdays
For more info, click here.

O’Connell's

How does a $20 ‘Steak & Grape’ grab you? O’Connells is a South Melbourne gem, tucked into the leafy backstreets, and every Monday night they serve up 250g grass-fed porterhouse with chips, gentlemen’s relish and a glass of red. Nice.

Cost: $20
When: Mondays, from 5pm (in the bar)

Tuesday Steak Nights

Richmond Club Hotel

One of our all-time favourites on Swan St, and they do a ripper steak night every Tuesday & Wednesday. $18 gets you a giant scotch fillet, chips and salad, and it even runs over lunchtime.

Cost: $18
When: Tuesdays & Wednesdays, lunch – dinner
For more info, click here.

Great Northern Hotel

$14 rump steak? Where do we sign. Set up camp in The Great Northern’s airy beer garden and tuck into a proper butcher's cut. You can get chips and salad or mash and veggies, and it comes with sauce. Kick things up a notch with $18 scotch or porterhouse (dinner sesh only).

Cost: $14
When: Tuesdays, lunch & dinner
For more info, click here.

The Bridge Hotel

Tuesday seems to be steak central in Richmond. The Bridge Hotel are also running an $18 special, which gets you a dirty great porterhouse, chips and salad. $16 parmas too, if that’s more your speed.

Cost: $18
When: Tuesdays & Wednesdays, lunch – dinner
For more info, click here.

The Exchange

Probably our favourite pub on Bay St, The Exchange offers up five different cuts on Tuesday nights (plus chips and salad). Take your pick and hand over $19. Easy done.

Cost: $19
When: Tuesdays
For more info, click here.

Wednesday Steak Nights

The Prahran Hotel

The Prahran Hotel is here to save the Humpday with $18 steaks running all day long. Probably wise to swing by between 5pm and 7pm though—that’s also their happy hour. $7 pints and $7 house wine sounds pretty good to us.

Cost: $18
When: Wednesdays all day
For more info, click here.

The Kingston Hotel

One of Richmond’s forgotten pub gems, The Kingston run a Steak & Pie night every Wednesday. It usually draws a pretty big crowd. $14 bucks gets you a 300g porterhouse (generous) plus scalloped potatoes and a rocket salad.

Cost: $14
When: From 5:45pm, Wednesdays
For more info, click here.

The Cornish Arms

This place is known for top-notch vegan fare (and a swanky new rooftop beer garden), but they also do $16 steaks on Wednesdays. You get a 250g porterhouse with loads of optional sides.

Cost: $16
When: Wednesdays
For more info, click here.

Thursday Steak Nights

The Railway Club Hotel

Port Melbourne's go-to for steak-hungry punters, the Railway Club Hotel is one of the busiest, most successful steakhouses in Melbourne. Thursdays is the night you want to come: for just $12.50 you can pick your cut and pair it with chips and sauce. Red wine jus, bandy & peppercorn or good ol’ mushroom. Nice.

Cost: $12.50
When: Thursdays (book in advance)
For more info, click here.

Prince Alfred Hotel

You’ve busted out of Melbourne Uni and you’re craving some serious steak. PA’s is the place to go. They've just undergone a massive refurb, and there’s a wicked $15 steak night running every Thursday. Head up to the new rooftop and tuck into steak, chips and salad (plus trivia from 7pm).

Cost: $15
When: Thursdays
For more info, click here.

The Swan Hotel

Good old Swan. How many nights have we spent here? Let’s make it a few more with $15 steaks every Thursday night. You also get a roquette salad, scalloped potatoes and a choice of four sauces.

Cost: $15
When: Thursdays
For more info, click here.

The Rose Hotel

Tom Hogan and John Tennent have done a great job with The Rose, and their steak night always draws a ripper crowd. No wonder too: $16 for rump steak, chips, gravy and salad. Not a bad feed at all.

Cost: $16
When: Thursdays
For more info, click here.

Friday Steak Nights

Abbey Rd Cafe

The elusive Friday steak night. Abbey Rd in St Kilda runs a Friday T-Bone steak night where you get a mammoth T-Bone, chips and salad for a cool $24. If you’ve ever actually sat down to eat a T-Bone, you’ll know that’s pretty good value.

Cost: $24
When: Fridays

They might not be on special, but here's where to get Melbourne's best steaks
