Opening today at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Now is an exhibition celebrating the best art, architecture, design and performance this happenin' city of ours has to offer.
Occupying 8000 sq m of the two-campus gallery – both the NGV International on St Kilda Road and the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square – and comprising the work of over 400 artists and collectives, it's the largest and most ambitious exhibition the NGV has put on to date.
Yep, we're totally spoilt for choice with an extensive program of performances, installations and talks covering a diverse range of artistic disciplines. Not sure where to start? We suggest you head to the Community Hall in the NGV International entrance foyer. Designed by McBride Charles Ryan, this brightly coloured structure is a hub of art and activity that will feature over 600 events and performances over the next four months. With a daily rotating program featuring everything from choirs to catwalks to cake making (a truly delicious art form), there'll be something here to tickle all fancies. Best of all it's completely free. Get on it.
One show we're particularly excited about is Out of the Kitchen, an hour-long program featuring some of Melbourne's hottest chefs, including Jacques Reymond, Shane Delia (Maha), Nicky Reimer (Union Dining), Karen Batson (Cookie) and Guy Grossi (Grossi Florentino, Cellar Bar). If you're a bit of a foodie groupie (ahem, guilty) this is a definite must-go.
The exhibition extends beyond gallery walls and spreads across the city with outdoor installations, open studios and walking and bike tours. See Melbourne's best street artists and graffiti crews come together for ALLYOURWALLS, a top-to-toe makeover of Hosier and Rutledge Lanes. Held on Friday 29 November from 6 'til 9pm, the opening party will feature live art, music and food, with artists and the public invited to celebrate this iconic Melbourne location and the people that have made it look so darn cool.
As you've probably already gathered we Urban Listers go a bit nuts for food trucks. So you can imagine our excitement when we found out that Melbourne's finest culinary automobiles have set-up shop in the NGV's backyard for the exhibition's opening weekends. Dude Food Man, Mr Burger, Banhmiboys and Phat Brats will all be in attendance (just to name a delicious few). Wash your feed down with a bevvie or three from the likes of Mountain Goat, Lucky Duck and Treasury Wines, and make sure you grab a frosty treat from the folks at Matrix Ice Cream and Yogurddiction.
Running until March next year, you'd be absolutely bonkers to miss this huge celebration of Melbourne-made creativity. Download the Melbourne Now app to plan your itinerary, browse multimedia content and find out where and when all these special events and activities are happening.
