Pran. Pah-raaan. Prahhhhhn. However you say it, there’s no denying that Prahran (and its very close cousin, Windsor) is one of the coolest, most eclectic suburbs out there and is home to some of the best bars, restaurants, shops and pamper spots that Melbourne has to offer.
Are you among the Prahran and Windsor uninitiated? Let us introduce you to our top picks of our beloved ‘burb—yep, you’ll find TUL Melbourne HQ here—with our latest Pick of the Precinct.
Honestly, where would we be without Prahran cafe stalwart Journeyman?! I’ve lost count of how many times they’ve saved me in the morning with their brilliant cups of joe—hands down, some of the best coffee in Melbourne—along with their excellent bircher and wow-factor breakfasts. With so many excellent cafes in Melbourne, Journeyman stands out from the pack.
Fast, fresh and flavoursome is the name of the game at Hanoi Hannah—one of our favourite restaurants in Prahran. Here you’ll find some of the best Vietnamese in Melbourne; big call, yes, however one bite of the Vietnamese chicken slaw, pho, or banh mi and you’ll soon know why. A word of warning: come early and be prepared to wait, because Hanoi Hannah gets busy FAST! Can’t be bothered waiting? Stop by Hanoi Hannah Express Lane a few doors down.
Bet you didn’t think you’d find lip-smackingly delicious Thai food in Revolver, right? It’s true, though! Brought to you by the team behind Cookie and The Toff in Town, Colonel Tans at Revolver Upstairs churns out some killer Thai food including betel leaf salad, fat duck noodles and, our favourite, Five Spiced Chicken. One of our fave restaurants for a group dinner, Colonel Tans also offers locals 50% off food on Thursdays—simply show a valid ID and you’re sorted.
At Massive Wieners they do three things and they do them damn well—hot dogs, shakes and fries. Funny name aside, the beauty of Massive Wieners is in the simplicity; there’s only three hot-dog types to choose from, so you can forget the stress of ordering indecision. The shakes are also too good to resist—we always leave with a large Choc Malt, without fail.
The Nutrition Bar
Have you overdone it with the naughty food of late? Perhaps you’re just looking for a healthy treat? Either way, if you’re in Prahran, make sure you stop by The Nutrition Bar, one of our favourite clean eating cafes in Melbourne. Everything here is fresh, healthy and super delicious, from the smoothies and green juices, to the salads and raw treats. Try it for yourself and see….Oh, and pick us up a raw snickers bar while you’re at it, yeah?
Lucky Coq in Prahran is everything you’d want from a low-key pub—relaxed vibe, cool tunes, and a great range of beers on tap. Take a seat in one of the comfy couches (some are so comfy we could almost fall asleep there…hey, we said almost!), kick back and enjoy a froffie and $4 pizza. Fuss-free heaven.
Relaxed yet glamorous, Morris Jones Bar on Chapel Street is a top spot for everything from a weekday wine to a Friday night cocktail. Their Espresso Martini is the bizznizz, not to mention the perfect way to get the party started. Another round, then?
White Oaks Saloon
Inspired by the drinking dens of the American south, White Oaks Saloon on Greville Street has a cocktail and whisky list that puts them straight up there with Melbourne’s best bars. Take a seat at the bar, order a whisky sour and some pork sliders, and you’re guaranteed a good night.
Borsch Vodka & Tears
Our last Borsch Vodka & Tears jaunt went for far longer than anyone should be out drinking on a school night, but hey, that’s what happens when you have such an awesome and loooong drinks list—you simply have to try one of everything! Cocktails and red, reeeeed wine aside, Borsch Vodka & Tears offer a scrummy share plates menu, making this Prahran bar a popular option for nights out.
In the jungle, the mighty Chapel Street jungle, lies the kooky Jungle Boy bar. Decked out with palm trees and animal paraphernalia, Jungle Boy ranks as one of the coolest hidden Melbourne bar as it can only be accessed through a fridge door in Boston Sub! Jungle Boy also has a stellar cocktail list and one of the best margaritas we’ve tried.
Milk & Sugar
Featuring Scandinavian designs with a distinctly Melbourne twist, Milk & Sugar’s latest store on Chapel Street is a must-visit if you’re looking for fun, affordable, quality homewares and decorator items. We love the cushions and throws, and also have our eyes on the crockery. Scratch that, we want it all!
One Point Seven Four
We have an addiction…an addiction to sunnies. You’d think, then, that One Point Seven Four would be on our “no-go” list but to hell with that, we’d rather browse the designer sunnies on offer and give our credit card a good workout. In all seriousness though, One Point Seven Four is HEAVEN TIMES INFINITY for sunglasses fans, with brands including Cutler and Gross, Dita and Victoria Beckham.
Handworks on Chapel Street is our go-to whenever we’re in need of a hostess gift or birthday card—the choices here are endless! From Glasshouse candles and Moleskine journals to leather goods and quirky cards, you’ll always find that perfect little something at Handworks.
A gem of a store on Greville Street, Lunar Store champions independent designers from Australia and around the world, stocking a truly eclectic mix of fashion, accessories, gifts and homewares. Last time we visited we stocked up on Happy Socks and Emily Green necklaces, and can’t wait to go back for the copper oil burners and dog print blouses. Such a fun spot to shop!
Long regarded as one of Melbourne’s best shopping spots for cool and quirky womenswear, Gorman on Chapel Street sees more of us than our families do—that’s how often we’re there shopping! The bright colours and bold prints are addictive, with many pieces finding a home in our wardrobes over the year. The entire Gorman x Miranda Skozeck collaboration is next on our wishlist!
Beauty & Health
A luxe yet totally approachable beauty and skin clinic on High Street, Claire Francoise is our go-to beauty salon for microhydrabrasion—a skin saving treatment that involves a light exfoliation with a diamond head, followed by a flush of water through the pores. The result? Clear, glowing skin that is suuuuper smooth. Oh yeah, it’s definitely one of the best facial treatments in Melbourne.
Exercise doesn’t come much more fun than the boutique fitness classes at Core Candy! The light-filled loft studios play host to a variety of core workouts including barre, HIIT, springboard pilates and yoga, all set to some pumping tunes. With expert teachers and a cap on class sizes to guarantee a personalised approach, Core Candy is our favourite gym in Prahran for a fun workout.
All hail UVA Salon—arguably one of the best hair salons in Melbourne! I mean, the proof is in the pudding; we’ve seen girl after girl walk out of UVA Salon with brilliant cuts, amazing colours and beautiful styling, so we can assure you the UVA team come through with the goods. Plus, they do one heck of a babelicious blow-dry, which we all know has the power to totally transform your look. We LOVE!
While the team at Ella Bache Prahran can knock out an awesome mani, pedi or massage like it ain’t no thang, it’s tanning and eyebrow waxing where they really excel. At Ella Bache the spray tans are even, long-lasting and, most importantly, imbue your skin with a faux glow so realistic you’ll have people asking how your holiday was. And as for the brows? Serious wow-factor in an instant.
Avenue Advanced Skin Care
Okay, so technically Avenue Advanced Skin Care is not in Prahran (it’s right next door in Windsor), however the skin treatments are so damn good, we couldn’t leave them out. Next time your skin is in need of some serious TLC or you have a special event to prep for, book in for the HydraFacial to plump up the skin and leave it smooth, even and bright. Mention The Urban List when you book and the Avenue Advanced Skin Care team will add a complimentary LED Light Therapy treatment to your session.
Before you say it, we know, we know—there are still SO many more brilliant places to eat, drink, shop and be pampered in Prahran! Check out our other favourites by typing “Prahran” in the search bar or email us to let us know your pick of the precinct!
