Just a decade years ago, the dine-in options for the vegan at the table would likely consist of a bland, starchy patty of nothingness accompanied by several nondescript lettuce leaves. Times be changing though, and Melbourne is at the forefront of flying the flag for the plant-exclusive and plant-curious alike.
So, eat green and check out the best vegan restaurants in Melbourne doing delivery—because, you know, lockdown and all.
Smith & Daughters
If you’ve been following Smith & Daughters over the years, you’d know the northside stalwarts of vegan culture switch up their menu from time to time. Their plant-based iteration of Italian cuisine was great, the more recent Spanish-American take on vegan fare was incredible, and their new takeaway menu doesn’t disappoint, either.
HIghlights include—but certainly aren’t limited to—the garlic prawns, the pulled pork burrito and the carbonara. You can order delivery and pick up here.
You can’t beat the classics, and that’s where Vegie Bar comes in. There are several faux-meat dishes here, but you’ll find that the humble vegetable is the hero here; tuck into one of their lighter Zen Bowls or get your hands dirty with one of their vegan pizzas to accompany you on one of those long nights in isolation
Much of the menu is vegan, but some is vegetarian. Check the label when ordering via Deliveroo or Uber Eats.
Prahran & Collingwood
We’ve all been there. Scrolling through your preferred food delivery service on a boozy evening, looking for a feed to satiate that growing hunger, you hit pizza, it’s delicious, then you realise it was vegan. Red Sparrow is arguably a favourite with vegans and omnivores because of this.
You can’t go wrong with anything off the menu, but if you’re really looking to soak it up, get on their poutine pizza which is known as Emperor Palpoutine.
Find Red Sparrow on Door Dash, Deliveroo and Uber Eats.
The Green Man’s Arms
The publicans may have shut their establishment’s doors right now, but some are still serving up their pub fare for takeaway, and that includes The Green Man’s Arms. Here, you’ll find a vegan version of pretty much every pub classic; make a night of it and order in a slice of some sticky date pud along with a bottle of one of their vegan wines.
Check out the menu and hit order here.
Sister of Soul
St Kilda and Richmond
Sister of Soul doesn’t focus on one particular style. Instead, they use inspiration from several different cuisines that hero bright and fresh plant-based meals in all their glory. The Nasi Goreng is a winner, as is the bolognese sauce that’s available to order and to add to whatever dish you like. Order directly here or from Uber Eats.
The Carringbush Hotel
There’s plenty of pubs in and around Abbotsford, but there are few that serve up a bombproof vegan menu like The Carringbush Hotel. If you’re thinking lunch get on that deep-fried pumpkin fritter wrap, or if it’s a PM vegan feed that you’re hankering for, order one of their pie specials.
Available on newcomer to the delivery scene, Mr Yum.
Pascoe Vale South
Shop 225 is squaring off the ‘burbs with their Italian fare, and they’re doing a damn good job at it. The team here are all about homemade pastas and pizzas, and they specialise in gluten-free options. We’re aware that the term gets thrown around loosely at times, but considering they’re the first GF accredited pizza house in Australia, we’re confident you’re in safe hands.
Order directly here, and check the label to make sure your dish is vegan.
GoodDays had us at sustainable and vegan-friendly pho. Since lockdown has kicked in, GoodDays has decided to sling their pho in kits for you to prep when you like. They vegan broth and fillings come in servings of four so you can keep yourself and your plant-friendly flatmates happy. Order directly here or via Deliveroo.
Morrocan Soup Bar
A northside favourite, Morrocan Soup Bar is continuing to serve up its cult classics to keep you warm and cosy during lockdown. If you've dined with Morrocan Soup Bar before, you'd know it's a casual affair, and the same rule applies to delivery. Keep an eye out here or on the Instagram to get your stews, bakes and dips sent straight to your door—and don't forget to check the label as to if it's vegan, as some options are vegetarian.
