Well, during the last weekend of July, you won’t need an invite or a ticket to a special event to visit Werribee Mansion: it’ll be open to the public for free as part of Open House Melbourne.
So if you’re one of those people who watches Downton Abbey reruns or are just plain curious what is really inside the beautiful Chirnside Mansion (except for the Hotel & Spa thing because you’ve probably seen enough of those), then grab your grandma or anyone who’s interested in 1800s architecture and head over to Werribee Park for a historic afternoon.
There will be plenty of information providing insights into the Mansion’s history, art, and architectural features. If you’re feeling particularly chatty, you can also ask the Parks Victoria staff and volunteers that will be on-site to refresh your memory on all the things you learned and then immediately forgot about the 1800s.
You can also get in on guided tours of the formal gardens, showcasing the lake, grotto, parterre and many heritage-listed trees (yes, they’re a thing). The garden tours are pre-booked due to limited capacity though, so you can drop a small $5 booking fee and reserve your spot here.
There will also be musical performances throughout the weekend and the café will be open so you can grab light snacks and beverages, which you can enjoy on the magnificent Great Lawn.
This rare event will only go on for one weekend only, so be sure to circle it in your calendar.
