12 Unmissable Events Happening In Melbourne This October

By Matt Carey
1st Oct 2019

To help you get over the fact that we only have one quarter of 2019 left on the calendar, we’ve rounded up some of the best, and most interesting things to do this October.

Melbourne International Arts Festival

Various locations

This year’s Melbourne International Arts Festival has been designed to be sharply focused, to create energy and urgency. Following the build-up of pressure and tension, the Melbourne Festival 2019 seeks to be a moment of lightning: charged by the friction of ideas, engagement and exploration, harnessed in the aftermath to create energy, debate and inspiration. Really fitting theme for that teamLab installation, by the way.

When: Wed, 2 Oct 2019 – Sun, 20 Oct 2019
Where: Various locations

teamLab's Reversible Rotation

CBD

This is not a drill, people: famous Japanese art collective teamLab is part of this year's Melbourne Festival. Presented in association with Tolarno Galleries as part of the Melbourne Festival, the Reversible Rotation exhibition will simulate the motion of hundreds of thousands of digital particles. Those particles will then be projected as cascades of shimmering luminescence, but to a viewer, the effect is that of floating in a wave made of light. TL;DR: it’ll be like you’re floating in a giant wave of digital light.

When:  Saturday, 5 October until Saturday, 2 November 2019
Where: Tolarno Galleries, Level 4/104 Exhibition St

The event claims to have a drink menu that will torch your tastebuds, as well as metal karaoke for unwilling participants. According to their event page “your whole shit is about to get twisted”, so buckle up – this could be a Halloween night to remember.

Continuing with the frightening festivities is Spooktober at Luna Park, which is happening during Halloween this month. With haunted houses and a themed bar – it’s sure to be a great way to send out October.
