Where Else To Eat On Grand Final Day

By Nathan Santamaria - 29 Sep 2016

This weekend could get a bit tricky if you’re planning on heading out for drinks or a feed. What’s going to be open? Where should I go to avoid the footy crowds? Will I need to book? What places are doing events? Whether you’re looking to dodge the footy faithful, find somewhere that’s still open on the public holiday or need a place to grab a pre-game feed that won’t be packed to the rafters, we have you covered.

Check out these places to go this grand final weekend:

Grand Pie-Nal Day At Queen Victoria Market

QVM has announced an event that will sauce up Footy Season for Melbourne's AFL fans. In celebration of the almighty bond between the AFL Grand Final and the mighty Meat Pie, the Market's Grand Pie-Nal Day will take place today with events and competitions. There will be a pie-eating competition that will be held in amateur, professional and kids divisions, with the competition awarded to the first to eat 25 pies or whoever eats the most in 5 minutes.

Unfortuntely the much anticipated pie baking competition has had to be cancelled.

The Black Toro

Glen Waverley

This gem nestled on the Kings Way strip in Glen Waverley is definitely one of our top recommendations for a feed this Grand Final weekend. Open both Friday and Saturday, The Black Toro is taking bookings for lunch and dinner all weekend. Their seasonal Hispanic menu is perfect for nibbling with fantastic ‘poco plates’, killer cocktails and a great dessert menu (hello peanut butter cheesecake).

Tank Fish & Chippery

Carlton, CBD

What’s more Australian than fish and chips and the footy? Chuck a VB in the mix and not a whole lot. If you’re looking for a quality fish and chip shop that’s going to be open Grand Final Eve and the big day then definitely check out Tank Fish & Chippery. They have old school Fish n Chip packs as well as A Fisherman’s Delights range that includes spiced calamari and battered oysters. Check them out at either Carlton or the CBD.

United Kitchen Dining & Tapas

St Kilda

If you’re looking for a post-Grand Final feed that’s not too far of a trek from the action then this St Kilda fusion tapas restaurant could be a good place to stop in. United Kitchen is taking bookings for dinner and their extensive cocktail menu is a great way to cap off the night. If you need something to nibble on while you’re sipping you drink then we recommend the Thai seasoned edamame and the dry-spiced crispy prawns (you’re welcome in advance).

HuTong Dumpling Bar

CBD

Need an easy pre-footy feed for this Saturday? HuTong Dumpling Bar is the perfect place to be for a cheap and delicious meal full of Xiao Long Bao, drinks, and dumpling goodness. The ideal location to walk to a local bar to watch the game for the afternoon.

The Penny Drop

Box Hill

Looking to dine away from all the hustle and bustle of the footy fans? Head down to The Penny Drop for coffee, lunch or dinner on Saturday. They do a great braised lamb flank and whip up a soft-shell crab burger that’s a nice change from your typical beef patty. Penny Drop is closed on Grand Final eve though and they don’t take bookings but if you get in early you shouldn’t have much trouble.

Man Tong Kitchen

Southbank

Not into the footy? Long Weekends are the perfect time to have that catch up with friends and family you haven't had time to do. Visit Man Tong Kitchen at Crown or book out their Banquet Room and taste delicious Chinese cuisine from all regions around the country. Open until 2am it is the perfect place to talk, eat, drink and reminisce for hours.

Odyssey @ Glamorama

Fitzroy

Start your long weekend off with a bang and head down to Glamorama on Thursday night. Odyssey are putting on a massive party specifically curated for the long weekend. Tunes and shenanigans will continue long into the night with the likes of Dan White, DJ JNETT, Edd Fisher and Louis McCoy. If you get down before 9pm then you’ll get in for free otherwise entry is $15 after that.

Neptunium Records @ Glamorama

Fitzroy

Get your grand final festivities going early (or just continue your long weekend partying) at Glamorama on Friday night. Neptunium Records are throwing a Final Destination public holiday bash and bringing in a lineup of local and interstate artists to pump out the tunes all night. Robina and Bass Cadet along with a host of others will be performing everything from deep house and disco to tech house and garage. Entry will be $10 at the door starting at 3pm and kicking on until 5am!
