good beer week

When Good Beer Week takes over Melbourne for its seventh-anniversary outing May 12-21, it will boast the biggest spread yet for food-lovers who like to dine out while imbibing beery goodness.

From beer-matched Indian feasts to BBQ treats served from a truck while acrobats tumble around a brewery for your entertainment, we’ve handpicked ten of the most inventive feeds that excite us most.

Beasts & Boilermakers

Fitzroy North

Can’t decided whether you love beer or whisky more? No need. Bluebonnet Barbecue’s owner and pitmaster Chris Terlikar will be rocking his smoky succulent finest alongside boilermaker combos - beer served with a whisky chaser. Working in conjunction with North Melbourne’s Barrow Boys Brewing, showing off their limited batch beers, it’s a match made in heaven. Find out more info here.

Bloody Feral Ripper Banquet

Winging over from WA, Feral Brewing will pair five of their best beers with contemporary Australian cuisine laid on in the iconic bluestone surrounds of Melbourne’s oldest public bar, these days known as Captain Melville. With nary a qualm about devouring the national emblems, expect both kangaroo and emu on chef Mark O'Laughlin’s menu. Find out more info here.

The Beer Ramen

We love beer and boy do we love ramen. That’s why we love hanging out at Abbotsford’s Shizuku Ramen, where they pride themselves on matching craft beer with their bowls of brothy brilliance. But dare we dream that these passions could combine? You betcha. In collaboration with local brewery champions Moon Dog, miso beer ramen is now an actual thing. Praise beer. Find out more info here.

A Heavenly Pairing - Beer & Cheese

St Kilda East

Speaking of marriages made in heaven, celebrate the perfect union of cheese and craft beer at the cathedral of frothy worship that is Carlisle Street’s The Local Taphouse. They’ll once again join forces with Fitzroy Street’s Milk the Cow fromagerie to pair off perfect partnerships you’ll never forget, but get in quick as this one sells out year after year. Find out more info here.

Stockade Brew Co X Eau-de-Vie Degustation

Ok, so it’s at the priciest end of GBW’s beery bonanza, but fanatical foodies might just be able to justify the $175 investment in Eau-De-Vie’s five-course degustation dinner. Teaming up with relative newcomers the award-winning Sydney outfit Stockade Brew Co, EDV will create cocktails that intriguingly build off of Stockade’s beers. We’re assuming that entails something a little more elaborate than a shandy. Find out more info here.

Monsieur Cavalier - A Beer and Chocolate Journey

Brunswick East

Chocoholics, this is not a drill! We repeat, NOT A DRILL!!! Chocolate and beer combine in devilishly divine form at Monsieur Truffe’s East Brunswick cafe East Elevation. Artisan outfit Cavalier Brewing, who specialise in experimental limited-release beers, have crafted a chocolaty beer to match beery chocolate from Truffe’s head chocolatier Samanta Bakker. They’ll both work hand-in-hand with head chef Brian Edwards to produce an unforgettable sit-down dinner. Find out more info here.

The Architecture Of Food

The industrious Romans had a theory about top notch building standards: firmitas, utilitas, venustas – in other words, good architecture is structural stable, makes good use of space and looks nice. Fancy CBD basement restaurant Meatmaiden are on board, and they’ve applied the golden rules to a lunch date with Collingwood brewery Sample’s finest, offering firmness, commodity and delight. Find out more info here.

Two Birds and Babu

St Kilda

We’ve long been fans of a tasty Indian curry washed down with a tangy cold one and St Kilda’s Babu Ji are basically the best in town when it comes to the former. The brilliance of Australia’s first female-owned brewing company Two Birds are on hand for the latter too, so how could this not be one of the best nights of the fest? There’s a vegie option on offer too. Find out more info here.

Hip Hops Block Party

The Magnolia courtyard at Collins Quarter will bounce to some block-rocking beats as this New York-inspired block party, Sample are on the beers again, but this time they’ll be sunk with American classics like grits, corn dogs, fried chook and the melty goodness of mac and cheese croquettes. Find out more info here.

The Brewery Circus

For something a little different, why not indulge in this acrobatic extravaganza hosted at Hawkers Brewery up in Reservoir? You get five included schooners of their finest with the ticket and a mind-bending circus act using the bones of the brewery. The performers have earned their stripes at Cirque Du Soleil, Circus Oz, Circa, NIDA and NICA. Even better, Fancy Hanks BBQ truck will be on hand while they do all the handy work.
