As the weather gets colder, you might find your mind wandering to a simpler time—when life was easy and you didn’t have to make polite conversation with the weird guy from sales who always seems to be hanging out in the kitchen. It’s called the weekend, and we’re here to make sure yours is amazing.  

From stargazing with Dr. Karl (Kruszelnicki not Kennedy, we checked), to grazing at some of the finest food events in town, this weekend is jam-packed with activities to keep your spirits high. So put down the chocolate bilby and check out our list of 14 awesome things to do in Melbourne this weekend.

Brianna Williams Comedy

Surfing the wave of success that has been her solo sketch career, Brianna Williams is back in town for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. A member of Melbourne’s premier improvised comedy group, The Big Hoo-Haa, Williams’ show incorporates improv, sketch comedy and audience participation to answer the question “what brings the joie to your vivre?”

Roll Over To Kingpin

If your Easter long weekend plans so far consist of eating chocolate, sleeping chocolate off and eating more chocolate in a never-ending vicious cycle, we’ve got a (significantly) better suggestion. Kingpin Bowling at Crown will be open late every evening through Easter, offering a change-worthy three activities for $30 per person (valid until 6pm everyday). Choose between laser tag, bowling or 30-minute arcade passes, then head over to the bar to sip on Espresso Martinis or nibble smoky beef sliders.

The Unique Space

Launching this weekend, The Unique Space offers shoppers an opportunity to discover new and truly unique brands, without having to scroll forever through their Instagram explore page. Boasting everything from food to fashion, design and art, this inaugural, three-day event will feature businesses like Myindah, The Prodigal Daughter, La Luna Rose, Studio Two Tees and Geometric Alchemy. Head to Melbourne Central from Friday to check it out.

The How Two Live Super Mega Awesome Wardrobe Sale

Absolute style icons and what I wanna be when I grow up, How Two Live, are offering stylish Melbournians the opportunity to give their wardrobes and Instagram feeds a complete makeover this weekend at their Super Mega Awesome Wardrobe Sale. With over 1000 pieces up for grabs—including dresses, shoes, bags and their iconic sunglasses—the girls will be transforming a house in Windsor into a huge, colourful walk-in wardrobe. Not only will the girls’ very own shoe brand TWOOBS have its own pop-up, there’ll even be a GIF booth, because photobooths are so 2016. Trainspotting Live

Call the babysitter and clear your schedule because Trainspotting Live is absolutely not to be missed. Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, this 75 minute production is truly immersive, with audiences literally playing a part in the show—Worst Toilet in Scotland scene anybody? The reviews are in and this glorious, hard-hitting show is a must-see.

Stargazing Live With Dr Karl And Friends

If thinking about the planets, the stars and our place in this vast, ever-expanding universe doesn’t immediately cause you to freak out and have an existential crisis then we have the perfect event for you. This Thursday evening, join Dr. Karl and friends at Fed Square as they stargaze through high-tech telescopes, voyage through space using Virtual Reality headsets, and discuss all things science. Then, after you’ve embarked on a journey of your own through the top notch food trucks and live entertainment, sit back and enjoy a broadcast of Stargazing Live with brainy heartthrob Brian Cox and Julia Zemiro.

Melbourne Burger Invitational

With so many food trucks claiming to sell the best burgers in town, Welcome To Thornbury is settling things once and for all at the Melbourne Burger Invitational 2.0. They’re bringing out the big guns this year, with 1090 Burgers, Beatbox Kitchen, Mr Burger, Royal Stacks, YOMG! and Sydneysiders BL Burgers all vying for the cheese and bacon-covered crown. The prizes don’t stop there—one lucky burger fanatic will be winning a year of burgers from their favourite vendor! Nuts About Tella will also be hopping along for the ride, because there’s always room for dessert.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Presents Pixar In Concert

Just in time for the school holidays, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra are headed to Hamer Hall to present the best nostalgia-inducing tunes from some of our favourite Pixar films—think Toy Story, The Incredibles and Monsters Inc. Join Woody and Buzz, Wall-E, Lightning McQueen and many more as they come to life through Grammy and Academy Award-winning scores by Randy Newman, Patrick Doyle, Thomas Newman and Michael Giacchino.

Baronettes Sampling At Baxter’s Lot

Live bands, cocktails and a menu of delicious bar snacks are what Baxter’s Lot is known for and this Friday night, they’ll be serving up exactly that. From 7pm, the Brunswick Street bar will see the Baronettes taking over the waitressing duties, handing out samples, so you’ll be sipping on cocktails made with Baron Samedi Spiced from the Baronettes themselves. Live music will kick off at 7pm as well and there’ll be Baron signature serves for $10 at the bar all night long.

Baronette Sample Session At The Deck

Cocktails by the beach are the ideal Saturday situation, and this month you should definitely head to The Deck in Frankston for a cheeky cocktail made with Baron Samedi Spiced. Baronette sample sessions will happen 8pm-11pm this Saturday 8 April and again on 16 April, you can also grab an $8 signature cocktail (wins all round). There’ll be live DJ sets 8pm onwards from resident DJs and on Sunday 16 April, John Course will be on the decks (see what we did there?).

Flour Market Southside Slice

Pop over to Prahran Town Hall this Saturday for a taste of Southside Slice, Flour Market’s first venture to the south. It's an event that’s sure to be bursting with bagels, crowded with croissants, jam-packed with jam-filled delights and, well, you get the picture. Doors will be open from 9am until stock is sold out, which shouldn’t take very long at all if we have anything to do with it. Early bird ticket holders will be permitted into the event 30 minutes before the general public—plenty of time to do some serious damage to your wallets and your waistlines. #worthit

The New Fit At 42-48 Claremont Street

If there’s anyone you should trust with advice about health and wellbeing it’s an Olympian, and who better than former Olympic Snowboarder Steph Prem? This Saturday, join Prem for a free wellness seminar and brunch, including muesli and yoghurt bowls from Banting Food Co., breakfast salads from SOS cafe, and refreshments from Green Street Juice Co. The Melbourne Food & Wine Festival is hitting up Eastland this year with a foodgasmic produce market known as Harveast (Get it? Like a harvest, in the east…let’s move on). There’ll be over 80 stallholders spruiking the usual artisanal stuff (homemade jams, breads), 20 local wineries and craft brewers from the Yarra Valley and masterclasses from some of Melbourne’s biggest foodie names: think MoVida’s Frank Camora, Dan Wilson from Huxtaburger and 400 Gradi’s own Johnny Di Francesco. There's even a champers and oyster bar courtesy of Hunky Dory. The festivities kick off at 10am, and there’ll be live music running until 8pm. Harveast is a one-time-only kind of deal, running on Sunday 9 April. Bring your appetite.

Kellybrook Cider Festival

Pull out the picnic rug, crack open a cider and celebrate the end of the apple harvest at the Kellybrook Cider Festival. A quick 40 minute drive from Melbourne, this family-friendly event is hosted in Kellybrook Winery’s picturesque gardens and vineyards. Taste some amazing scrumpy and quaff wine to your heart’s content as you sit under the old oak, listening to live music and watching Morris dancers in confusion.
