17 Free Things To Do In Melbourne This June

By Grace Evans - 01 Jun 2017

Let’s be honest, everybody loves free stuff.  Whether it’s those tiny chicken samples they hand out at Woollies, or a pamphlet on hardware essentials, if it’s 100% free, you’ll probably take it.

So join us in celebrating all the free things that Melbourne has to offer this June. There’s a 90% chance it’ll be better than those hardware pamphlets (unless orbital sanders are really your thing).

Open Cellars Winter Weekend

Free entry and free wine. An irresistible combo. The Open Cellars Winter Weekend is the ultimate freebie for wine lovers. Ten award-winning wineries in the Artisian Hills will be opening their doors for you to sample wines, enjoy warm wood fires and relax with live music.  Each winery will have their own spin on the day, and will be pouring some of their finest wines free of charge. Boozy weekend road trip? Who’s going to be DD?

When: 11am-5pm June 17 & 18

Docklands Firelight Festival

Nothing screams exciting like big balls of fire, especially when Melbourne winter is at its penguin-freezing peak. Dockland’s new Firelight Festival will feature a selection of performers embracing fire and lights. Spread across three nights, there’ll be great food, music and a small dose of Burning Man-style entertainment. Think three large sculptures by artist Christian Patton, set alight each night, just to keep your mitts warm. A fireside festival on a winter’s night—you can’t go wrong.  Oh and did we mention it’s FREE entry?

Queens Birthday Street Party

The long weekend is a time of giving, and St Kilda is giving us a FREE street party. Popping up on Fitzroy Street, you can expect to see street performers, musicians, fire twirlers, circus acts and drag queens. Yep, the Queens Birthday Street Party is pretty much the full package. And just when you think there couldn’t possibly be more excitement packed in one day, the Queen herself will be riding by on a horse and carriage (may not include actual Queen). Amazing entertainment, all free of charge—you’d be crazy not too.

The program actually stretches over two months, and caters to everyone, whether you’re looking to join a native food workshop, or wanting to cheer on the Dachshund Dash. Vinomofo Introduces Wine-Scream

Gluten free and lactose-free are okay, but when food is ACTUALLY free, that’s when you can go nuts. Vinomofo are bringing you free ice cream with wine in it. Just take a minute to absorb that. They will be at this year’s Good Food & Wine Show, debuting their inappropriate yet hilariously-named wine-screams. E.g. the Fanny Limehead, a soft serve sorbet made from a zesty Riesling from Clare Valley. Wine lovers go get these incredible inventions before they become a thing of the past. It won’t be hard to find them at the Exhibition Centre, just follow the screams of joy.

Good Food and Wine Show

Free Donuts At Dandenong Market

“Holey moley, free donuts!” That is going to be your exact reaction when setting foot in the Dandenong Market this Friday, because Dandee Donuts are giving away boxes of FREE jam donuts. It’s all to celebrate National Doughnut Day, a holiday we had no idea existed, but promise to honour religiously from now on. The free doughnuts start running at 8am this Friday 2 June, and don’t stop for eight hours. Go crazy (or should we say, go dough-nuts).

Truffle Melbourne Festival

A free weekend snuffling for black gold? Sounds good to us. The Truffle Melbourne Festival is setting up shop at the Queen Victoria Market this month. There’ll be live chef demonstrations, truffles testers, take home produce and just a whole lot of truffle-related things. Some of the ready-to-eat exhibitors will include That’s Amore Cheese and St Kilda burger bar. A huge line-up of truffles and good free food is not to be missed. They’re calling it “the world’s tastiest game of hide and seek”.

Queen Vic Winter Night Market

The Queen Vic Winter Night Market is gearing up for another magnificent year. Some of the best restaurants around Melbourne will pull up a spot to dish out quality food at lightning speeds. Don’t be a downer on queuing up, because those massive paella woks are always worth it. We promise. Along with great food there will be live music, new fashion and art stalls, and a bunch of special entertainment to keep you busy while you devour delicious plates of goodness. This true Melbourne classic doesn’t cost a cent to get into, so don’t be shy—go make Hump Day awesome again.

Stacey Korfiatis – ‘Threshold’ Exhibition

Seeing great art is always mesmerizing. But seeing great art and knowing it didn’t cost you a cent is even better. Upcoming art exhibition ‘Threshold’ is promising just that.  Melbourne artist Stacey Korfiatis is going outside the box, painting ethereal nudes that reflect on issues of autonomy. Her collection of sculptural, oil on canvas female nudes opens the dialogue to gender inequality and female empowerment. One for the culture vultures.

Running for its fifth year, the free event will also feature tastings of some of Melbourne’s finest food and drink. Neon Night Garden

Let there be light! Melbourne artist Carla O’Brien has certainly brought the light this year. She’s the brains behind Neon Night Garden, a QV transformation which is taking over the CBD shopping centre (and its surrounding laneways) with super dope neon art installations. We’re talking colourful wings on a giant butterfly and a 2.4-metre-high Neon Night Garden archway. It’s basically a giant, light-filled wonderland. Also you need to go check out these wings—Katy Perry wore them to Burning Man, and that’s probably as close as any of us are ever gonna get.

Where: The Kelvin Club

Batman Night Market

You’ll have to hit the Northern burbs for this little gem. The Batman Night Market is being held every Saturday, starting in June. There’ll be an awesome line-up of Melbourne’s finest food trucks, live music and arts and crafts. Something for every type of market-goer. For all the winter haters, there will also be outdoor heaters on full blast (a necessity with night markets). If the Queen Vic Market’s bustle gets you down, hit the suburbs for some relaxing market vibes.

Dance Technique At New Guernica

The words “nine to five” are not usually associated with rhythm or happiness, but this is an exception, because THIS nine-to-five shift involves a dance party at New Guernica. Starting at 9pm and running right through to 5am, the ever popular “guerns” will be providing party goers with sick beats until the early hours of the morn. Best part about it? Entry is free. With their huge selection of DJs, the disco fever will have everyone boppin. And if you feel your stamina lagging around 2am, chug a Red Bull. Works wonders.

When: Every Thursday in June, from 9pm onwards
Where: New Guernica, 322 Little Collins St

Port Fairy Dachshund Dash

It’s technically part of the Port Fairy Winter Weekends festival, but we felt this one deserved its own entry. Insta has been the number one destination to find all your Dachshund cuteness in one spot. Until now. Grab your keys, people, because Port Fairy is having a Dachshund Dash. The day will consist of a puppy brekky in the morning and will end with a sausage-dog race in the afternoon. Little legs travelling at high speeds will honestly be incredible.

When: 9am, June 11
Where: Southcombe Park, Port Fairy

Footscray Finds Market

Sunday markets are the little spark of hand-me-down joy in every Melbournian’s weekend. Snatching up some absolute finds (at a teensy price) is literally amazing. The Footscray Finds Market is no exception. Their vintage goods and arts and crafts are known as some of the best in town. Entry is 100% FREE and there’s live music and food trucks to keep you busy. Good times all ‘round. Go snatch up a bargain.

Funny At The Brunny

Laughter should be free, right? But if you’ve ever shelled out $120 for top-shelf international comedians at The Arts Centre, you’ll know that isn’t always the case. Lucky The Brunswick Hotel is bringing the free joy this month, with their Funny At The Brunny line-up. Every second Monday, The Brunny will be flooded with top-notch comedians attempting to give you the giggles (plus a few crowd-warming sets from hosts Mo Mann, Glen Zen and Ashley Fils-Aime). Just what you need on a cold winter’s night.

City Cellar Door Series

Hands up who wants FREE wine tasting at Cumulus? A fair few of you, cool. Well listen up, because Andrew McConnell is inviting you to his city wine bar and it’s 100% free. Cumulus Up will be showcasing different wine regions from around Victoria, all in a convenient CBD location. You’ll get the chance to meet the best winemakers from around the region and taste what they have on offer. There will also be some delish food served up by Meatsmith’s, Troy Wheeler (the wine is free, the meat is not). A whole roast pig and free wine tasting—you’d be crazy not to.
