The season of Pimms, Frosé, and Aperol Spritz is upon us. That means no week (or weekday, if we’re practising 100% honesty) is complete without a few glasses of these ice-cold bevvies, preferably enjoyed in the sunshine while sporting a #EuroSummer tan.
Southgate is home to an emporium of sun-soaked drinking spots, making it the ideal location for mid-week tipples, pre-theatre nibbles and dranks with a side of sunset views. Here are our nine fave summer drinking spots along the bank you definitely should have been to by now.
At the door of the Hamer Hall and Arts theatre, The Deck provides stunning views of the CBD along with impeccable French-style charcuterie. If that doesn’t win you a third date, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Skip the small talk and order the chicken liver pate, served with pillow-soft brioche and blood orange chutney. The artichoke with bresaola and stracciatella is another highlight of the menu.
Housed above P.S Bar & Kitchen, Pure South is the more refined, polished older cousin. Creative dishes include the broccoli doughnut (your mum would be proud), with Pyengana cheddar custard, or the King Island grass beef tartare with spiced pear. Order a bottle bubbles to celebrate the end of the workweek while you’re at it.
With cocktails like the Gucci Martini (Grey Goose L’Orange vodka and lychee liqueur) and Million Dollar Baby (including Baileys and fresh espresso), you can’t really go wrong at BearBrass.
Start with natural oysters and gnocchi with asparagus, tomato, parmesan and truffle (because there’s never a wrong season for gnocchi) if you’re after more than just drinks, though.
To celebrate the warmer months, Tutto Bene is bringing all their Italian love to Southgate. ‘AperiTutto’ will run daily from 3pm to 5.30pm, so we suggest leaving your desk early. Promised specials include $6 house wines and $10 Italian cocktails.
Pair it with one of their ten varieties of classic Italian risotto including squid ink with calamari ragu (heaven is real and it’s this dish).
You’ll literally be rewarded for eating at La Camera. For every antipasto platter you order during “The Aperitivo” between 4pm and 5.30pm everyday, you'll receive a complimentary summer tipple including Aperol Spritz, Campari, or Prosecco. Yes, it is a rough, rough cycle.
One of the newer kids on the Southgate block, Waterslide Bar have a rotating selection of drink specials in their luxe, lilac-themed bar. Enjoy a selection of cheese on the bar overlooking the city skyline.
Melbourne’s infamous modern German beer hall, Hophaus is home to the annual sausage dog race and finest cheese kranskies in the city. There’s a generous selection of cocktails and wine, but we’re toddling over for ice-cold German beers and hot, hot sausages.
Bluetrain has recently gotten a facelift and everyone is going to want to get on board. From pick ‘n’ share plates to pastas, and killer cocktails, we recommend making your way through the most outlandish combinations—including the Golden Gaytime Toblerone cocktail.
ENA Greek Street Food
We could write odes about ENA Greek’s authentic, mouth-watering share-plates, the delightfully simple but refreshingly cocktails, or the homemade dips, but here’s why you need to go, stat: pan-fried saganaki.
