Archive | A Permanent Yet Transient Collection

By Emma Forster - 03 Nov 2013

Archive: a collection of historic files, documents or records held in some kind of storage. In this case, though, we're talking an archive of a different kind – a well-appointed collection you'll wish were all yours…

This Archive holds an exquisite collection of vintage and second-hand designer fashion pieces and garments in a unique, contemporary space, with labels the likes of Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto currently on high rotation. That's just what happens after a week-long buying spree to Japan, with some serious spending and spreadsheets right thur…

This unique exhibition space slash fashion retail store has set up deluxe-camp in the seriously stunning and iconic Mitchell House in the CBD and – wow – it sure is worth a visit. The Archive studio space, designed by SIBLING architects, is five floors up with a stunning view of the bustling Elizabeth and Lonsdale streets below.

Brought to fruition by Maya Webb and Lauren Urquhart, Archive houses a revolving unique and limited edition collection.  Currently, a 'Back To Japan' exhibition resides in the space, curated by John Ibrahim and featuring the aforementioned Japanese designers.

Archive allows shoppers to purchase affordable, quality items while consigners can recycle and sell their pre-loved, high end garments on to the next person (no dodgy old trackies, please). As Maya Webb puts it, "Archive is a retaliation against the disposable fashion movement. We sell on recycled fashion, allowing a garment's story to pass to its next owner."

Archive celebrates a collaborative concept, and is set to feature regular exhibitions and designers in residence, with the added opportunity to showcase and sell their own work.

The transience of the one offs and rare items on display is what makes Archive most special; each garment has its own unique story from a different era, and the pieces are not necessarily following the latest trends. The opportunity is there to appreciate a garment for its aesthetic character and, if so inclined, make a purchase for your very own archive.

Come and see what's alive in the Archive!

Archive is open Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 6pm and Saturday, 10am – 3pm.

Room 5, Level 5, Mitchell House, 358 Lonsdale Street (corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale) in Melbourne CBD.
