The Greek community of Melbourne are taking over Lonsdale Street this weekend to celebrate the 2014 Antipodes Lonsdale Street Festival, and like any Greek celebration, it's going to be huge.
Spanning the whole weekend, there's plenty of time for you to head down, have a shot of ouzo and join in on all the fun – especially when there's a few good prizes to be won!
When there's a trip to Greece up for offer, most of us would do anything. This weekend that means dancing the Zorba until you drop, literally. Starting at 1:30pm, the Zorba 'Til You Drop contest is simple – the last one standing wins.
Sound easy? We've been warned this dance requires skill and stamina – save the ouzo for after maybe, there's plenty on offer!
After your moment in the spotlight, head on over to the Barbaresso Oyzo Ouzeri to taste test Australia's favourite ouzo. This outdoor pop-up bar will have you dreaming of summers in Greece in no time at all.
Come 5 o'clock you'll surely have plucked up the courage to compete in the Greek Karaoke competition (you can thank the ouzo for that!) – you could win the coveted gold microphone as well as other awesome prizes. Dinner at Hellenic Republic? Yes please!
Wrapping up Saturday's festivities, check out the main stage for Greek music royalty, Kostas Makedonas as he woos the crowd with his voice. Don't stress if you can't make it there on Saturday night – he performs again on Sunday!
What kind of Greek festival would be complete without food?! The 2014 Lonsdale Street Festival will see the introduction of a dedicated food space to showcase all the best in Greek products and cooking. Don't miss out on some great cooking demonstrations by local chefs, including Phil Vakos of Spitiko and Kathy Tsaples of Sweet Greek.
This weekend isn't just for the adults either – with plenty of activities for the kids, this will be a great day out for the family. Puppet making, face painting and carnival rides – the kids will love it!
