'Drink me' read the label on the little bottle. Alice was certain it was not on the table when she had looked just before. Yet, soon she would press the vial to her lips and do as the beautiful script commanded (after wisely checking it did not also say 'poison').
Thankfully, you and I don't have to take such Carrollian risks for an invitation to a Mad Hatter's style Tea Party. Rather than travelling through a looking glass or down a rabbit hole, we only have to brave the unmarked green doors of The Understudy, the hidden CBD bar tucked away below 1806. Yet they promise there will still be many wonders to encounter at their new monthly event!
Bar manager and creative director, Dan Warren, explains The Understudy team wanted to 'offer something original based on training and under-utilised ingredients'. Thus, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party was re-incarnated as an intimate monthly session, offering a three-course cocktail degustation with matching food bites, plus a side of relaxed expert commentary. Each party will see one under-appreciated or downright quirky cocktail ingredient made into the guest of honour.
Dan reckons sherry is probably the most ignored flavour as far as cocktails go in Australia, so they kicked off proceedings with the fortified Spanish wine earlier this month. But upcoming parties are a mixed bag, potentially showcasing anything from whiskey and cheese, to chocolate or beer. Don't expect just a few twists on classic drinks either. The Understudy espouses molecular mixology, or as Dan very technically suggests, 'it's more science-y'.
The next Mad Hatter's Tea Party at The Understudy is set for Thursday 15th August from 7pm. Whiskey (with a soon to be revealed expert) will be matched with Calendar cheese. Tickets are $50. To book, email firstname.lastname@example.org
