Mavis The Grocer to Open in Abbotsford

Listers, the rise of Abbotsford continues with news that two of Melbourne’s most in-the-know restaurateurs, Dan Zeidan and Maurice Manno, are set to open Mavis The Grocer, a new Melbourne cafe and artisanal grocer.

Housed in a beautiful old heritage building on the corner of Vere and Nicholson Street, Mavis The Grocer is Zeidan and Manno’s version of the traditional corner store with an organic, seasonal and sustainable feel.

Everything you need to stock your pantry can be found at Mavis The Grocer—think shelves stacked high with organic milk, artisan bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, quality organic pasta and sauces, with plenty of items produced and packaged in-house.

As well as the retail element, Mavis The Grocer will have a full cafe offering with a strong seasonal, sustainable and organic focus. Breakfast will include crowd-pleasing organic scrambled eggs, homemade muesli and more, while superfood salads, tender meat and veggies, and a selection of sandwiches are some of the moreish lunch dishes. Can’t stay for a meal? Mavis has got your back with a range of delicious take home meals for sale.

Drinks-wise, Mavis The Grocer’s menu will be complemented by some of the best coffee in Melbourne courtesy of local roasters, along with fresh juices and healthy smoothies. The venue is fully licensed so should you wish to indulge in a tipple or two, you can take your pick from one of the many local and sustainable beers and wines available.

While Zeidan and Manno’s resume boasts beloved Collingwood restaurants The Grace Darling Hotel and Lazerpig Pizza Parlour (Zeidan also owns A Boy Named Sue in St Andrews), they’ve also clocked up 20 years working in the Melbourne cafe scene.

They’ve taken on the fit-out themselves, scrapping the need for fancy-pants designers, instead choosing to deck out Mavis The Grocer with black and white checkered floors, an old bar that was rescued from Her Majesty’s Theatre, gold leather banquettes and shelving up to the roof on every wall. Mavis The Grocer also features a year-round heated courtyard, which will be surrounded by planter boxes full of herbs and a 3-metre high hanging garden.

Slated for opening in late June, Mavis The Grocer is one new Melbourne cafe that we’re super pumped for. Mavis, we can’t wait to meet you!
