There’s plenty happening around Melbourne at the moment, and Melburnian’s are definitely making hay while that sun is shining.
This weekend is no exception with a ton of things to do, including the 2019 edition of the Prahran Summer Slam.
Events this year include a men’s 5 on 5 tournament, women’s 3 on 3, a slam dunk contest, and the #SpreadTheJam competition.
If you’re heading along, you can also win yourself $250 for the photo of the day.
We caught up with Daniel from Prahran Summer Slam to get him to talk us through it.
How long has Prahran Summer Jam been going?
Prahran Summer Jam was established in 2011. Unfortunately, it rained out during the first event so the event officially began in February of 2012.
How did it all start?
Eamon and I grew up playing basketball at Prahran Park, it’s always been our home.
Throughout the years, the court has held many different characters, some of whom are now professional basketball players, such as Deng Adel. As a way of giving back to the community, we created the summer jam. It’s become a major part of Prahran and it's history—a cultural aspect of grassroots basketball in Australia, we are the first and original streetball tournament.
What can we expect from this year’s event?
This year we have some of the best streetball teams from all over Australia competing, including Brotherwolf and Terror Squad.
At the dunk comp this year, we have international dunk comp champion, Guy Dupuy flying over from France to headline, as well as Brodie Stephens from Queensland, who will also be dunking at this year's event.
This year, we have expanded the vicinity, introducing a beer garden, as well as food market around the park.
There will also be local artists and DJ's performing live at the event, all of which add to the festival which is Prahran Summer Jam. This event is run through our apparel brand, Prahran Summer Jam X Mitchell and Ness, which allows for free entry on the day—so please feel free to get a tee.
What’s a highlight someone can expect?
The highlight for me would have to be the overall vibe of the day. There is so much talent out there, and we are lucky enough to showcase it at the jam.
We get people of all ages from all over Melbourne and the rest of Australia coming down to Prahran to witness the greatness of our event.
Anything you can tell us about Summer Jam at this point?
It’s on the down-low at the moment—although it has been hard to keep it a secret.
We’ll be releasing the details of the event such as line-ups, artists and location at the Prahran Summer Jam this Sunday. See you all down there!
Don’t miss the after party which kicks off at Two Wrongs from 8pm.
