What's On

The Return of The Shadow Electric

31st Oct 2013

Even though the weather is wet, windy and downright weird, that shouldn't deny us of our love of doing cool things – in particular, hitting up the open-air cinema. Though we're not exactly struggling for choices when it comes to the old indie cinema (Rooftop, Ben & Jerry's, Opel, et al.) the one we're wetting our pants over is the highly anticipated The Shadow Electric, hosted each year at the Abbotsford Convent, which brings us awesome films, great food and drink, and that famous ping pong table.

From November 21st, a selection of films illustrating the exceptional taste of The Shadow Electric film buffs will be shown on their open-air screen. For the Cannes enthusiasts, there'll be Frances Ha, Blue Jasmine, The Way Way Back and Behind the Candelabra. Cult-movie fans will be thrilled to don a dressing gown and sip a white Russian whilst watching The Big Lebowski, shoot their mouths off to Bad Santa, or indulge in some blaxploitation with Jackie Brown. Or maybe you need some noir in your nightlife, and will be bringing mates to the Lolita and Sunset Boulevard screenings. If you're not really a cinephile and just dig sweet tunes, you'll be pleased to hear that there will be some great music documentaries on offer too, including the seminal Cosmic Psychos film, The Stone Roses antics, or perhaps you're in the mood to feel your inner feminist roar with the Pussy Riot doco.

Speaking of tunes, as a warm up to the cinema, The Shadow Electric bandroom will be opening its doors on November 1st to get us all up and about at the Convent. They've secured a sweet gang of crooners this year, with opening night featuring Citizen Sex and Scotdrakula, and moving forward there'll be Courtney Bartnett, Pluto Jonze, Bored Nothing, Palms and many more. Be quick and snap up your tickets below, as the bandroom action wraps up on November 10th.

It's going to be a great start to the summer and a definite highlight of the Abbotsford Convent calendar, so make sure you book a ticket and park your picnic spot at The Shadow Electric come November!
